Kirin is a scrawny kid, all knees and elbows, who is constantly fidgeting. He’s fairly fit from a childhood of running around the mountains. In the sun of Semaca, his skin has become tanned and smattered with freckles, a contrast to his green eyes. He cuts his shaggy, shoulder-length hair himself, and it is perpetually messy, sometimes pulled into a ponytail.
He doesn’t give much thought to clothing, wearing whatever is at hand so long as he can move freely in it. However, he has pierced his ears, and is fond of sticking bits of bone or little handmade trinkets through them, as well as wearing bracelets and necklaces made with found objects.

Kirin comes across as loud, rather obnoxious, and careless. He’s sociable in a superficial way, seeking attention and admiration. However, he doesn’t know what to do with sincerity or vulnerability.
Kirin hasn’t ever entertained much hope for the future or trust in his surroundings, so he chronically lives in the moment, getting as much out of every instant as he can. He has learned to snatch all the scraps he can for himself, make a comfortable little routine, and not look beyond that.
He keeps a collection of rocks, little carvings, animal bones and the like — these constitute his home more than any physical place.
Kirin is smarter than he’s given credit for, but he has never applied himself. He has a heart and potential to be a member of the weyr community somewhere. However, he will fight every step of the way to hide the best parts of himself, because he is deeply mistrustful of leaving himself open.

Kirin was conceived during a Gather a few years after the Interval War ended. His father was a visiting trader who remained unknown to him, and his mother died in childbirth. According to Kirin, this suited him just fine — being parentless and fostered out around the nearby mining holds meant he wasn’t subject to as much scrutiny or as high expectations.
He settled into being the problem child, scraping by with what low-level chores could be entrusted to him, and no one looked for anything more from him. As long as he was fed and could run off to explore the foothills or stage faux battles with other Hold youngsters, he was content. However, most of the adults in his hold worked mining the mountains. Kirin dreaded the thought of spending the rest of his days buried in the mines, but it was taken for granted that he would soon join them.
Then, Kirin overheard a trader telling tales of Semaca - the pirates, the wonders of the jungle, and the fact that anyone could become a Candidate there. Never one to deliberate, Kirin sneaked off the next day. Between the money he'd stolen and volunteering to work, he made his way to a port and set off for Semaca on a pirate ship, ready to begin a true adventure.
In his childhood, Kirin acted blasé and devil-may-care, swore a lot, and nursed any physical or emotional wounds in private. This made him seem precocious and more grown up than he was. But now that he is in adolescence, these traits increasingly mark him as immature. Kirin dislikes this, but more than that dislikes the idea of growing up. To him, that only means restriction and responsibility.
