PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Jamil is a kind and cheerful person, always willing to help those around him. He loves to cook and clean and work to make everyone happy.
That's the persona he wants people to see.
He is highly intelligent, calculating and an excellent actor. He puts on his persona to make people want to depend on him, build himself up and make himself feel better about himself. Still, he himself lacks an identity that isn't being 'helpful'. He knows it. He hates it. And yet, he cannot bring himself to stop.
Jamil resents many things in his life. Resents not being able to have a purpose in life, resents being assigned a purpose via candidacy… and resents himself for being so damn choosy about his supposed destiny. Hence why he decided to leave his old life behind and start fresh in Semeca. His life goal is to find his 'purpose', or at least to experience some sort of epiphany to point him towards it.
Due to his upbringing, he has a superiority complex, of sorts. He has a somewhat black and white view of the world, seeing causes and people as worthy and unworthy. This has also lead him to being incredibly opinionated and individualistic. It prevents him from finding and creating many genuine relationships.
His upbringing has made it difficult for him to be flexible. Being unable to mentally deviate from set plans and instructions has done him no favors, and has had him say that people were 'doing things incorrectly', and take over for them. It also makes it difficult for him to improvise in his cooking endeavors, should the kitchens lack the ingredients he needs to cook and do his job.
In addition, he also has difficulty deviating from his schedule thanks to turns of constant supervision and training, and often will be far more irrate and angry should he be pulled from the scheduled path he has set for himself.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Father: Yashir
Mother: Venan
Sister: Najma
SIGNIFICANT OTHER:
BIRTHPLACE: A small, nondescript Cothold
HISTORY:
Jamil was born to help a wealthy trader family, alongside his parents and sister. His family had been doing that for as long as anyone could recall, and it was expected that Jamil would continue to carry on the family occupation.
He was good at it, able to sell high and buy pow with the best of them. But he hated it deep down. Hated that he never had time to be on his own. Never had time to really just BE Jamil. He would wander off to take breaks, and still get followed by the trader's obnoxiously happy son.
How he HATED him.
So when he was chosen to be a candidate by a passing dragonrider, he was ECSTATIC. He finally could do just BE Jamil. Be his own person, have his own destiny!
And of course, the same dragonrider was bribed to say that the trader's son was also candidate material.
No matter. Jamil worked his hands to the bone, and did everything in his power to be the most presentable and exceptional candidate. He loved to learn, and was incredibly knowledgeable about all things draconic by the time he was able to stand. Ista Weyr was an excellent place to start, and he looked forward to getting a dragon in due time.
And yet not a single dragon looked at him.
Turn after Turn. Clutch after clutch. Not a single dragon so much as sniffed in his direction. That was to be expected of course! He knew that. He trusted that he would get one eventually.
But… his parents were starting to send letters. Telling him to come back to the family, to go back to work. And he replied that he would not. That he wanted to get a dragon and prove he was capable of more than grunt work.
And then the worst possible thing happened.
It turned out that the trader's son, the one who wasnt even supposed to BE THERE...impressed.
Jamil saw red. That dragon was supposes to be HIS. His hated for the trader's son bubbled over. If he was still going to be less than him in this aspect, when his skill was supposes to be rewarded...! It would be better if he just left. He was so furious that he went about securing passage to another weyr. Anywhere but there.
He spent a lot of time traveling. Just trying to keep himself from lashing out about his own misfortunes. But being on his own did help a lot. He was finally free, at least. And yet… thanks to the connections, that blasted trader's family was always somehow able to cross paths with him. Be it chance or something more sinister, he felt like he could never get away.
And so. He would do something desperate.
He would take all the marks saved from working, and take a boat to the new continent.
Jamil would not be deterred. He would not be hounded by his family there. He would find his happiness or die trying. Nowadays, he works to farm and cook for the weyr, supplying tasty meals to the hardworking and worthy residents of Semeca. It was something he had always wished to do, unless under durress by his family. But here, he was free. And he was happy.
