Faryn

Faryn
"Let the future bring what it will."

BASICS

NAME: Faryn
GENDER: Female
PRONOUNS: She/Her/Hers
ORIENTATION: Straight

BIRTHDATE: Spring 2714
AGE: 58 as of Late Summer 2772
LOCATION: Semaca Weyr
OCCUPATION: Journeyman Healer

APPEARANCE
EYES: Amber
HAIR: Black, streaked with gray
HEIGHT AND BUILD: 5'8", sturdy and well muscled.
FULL APPEARANCE:
Faryn isn't necessarily the most conventionally beautiful woman. Her face is scarred and her nose looks like it's been broken at least once in her lifetime. Her teeth are a little crooked and yellowing with time. She has shoulder length hair that, once upon a time, used to be completely black. Now, it's streaked with gray and thinning slightly with age. Her eyes are amber and she has deep crow's feet at the corners. Her frown lines are also pronounced, and give her the appearance of a woman who's life has been long and hard. Her most noticeable scar starts at her chin and cuts through the left side of her lips. Others include one that splits her right eyebrow and crosses the bridge of her nose, and a small scar on her right cheekbone.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Appearances aside, Faryn actually is a fairly grumpy individual. A hard life has left her patience worn down and she's to deal with people's bullshit. She's not cruel, but she will absolutely shut down unrealistic dreams or anyone who tries to start a something with her. If she had a catchphrase, it would probably be some iteration of 'life is a bitch'. Even in a good mood, Faryn is more of a 'tough love' type of individual. She's realistic, bordering on pessimistic, and doesn't placate people. She'll call the situation like it is, and doesn't use flowery language often. As a well worked healer, she cares a great deal about her work. If anything is the exception to her grumpy disposition, it's her time helping others. She's still blunt, but she understands how difficult being injured can be for someone. If anything, she's far more sympathetic when dealing with the injured.

Faryn has a soft spot for children, from being a mother herself to the amount of young candidates who get hurt doing one thing or another. She tries to be patient with them, to calm their nerves when she can. She enjoys teaching younger healers what she knows as well, and may be seen as a parental figure to people she takes a liking to.

HISTORY:
Faryn was born to a loving family. She was the first of her parent's two children, a spritely but well behaved girl and a caring older sister. As she neared candidacy age, she spent hours daydreaming of the day when a searchdragon would come and sweep her away to a weyr, where she would impress a wonderful dragon. Before that day could come, though, Faryn found her resolve shaken by horror stories of Threadfall and war. The tales of riders who lost their partners to Thread or other dragons were the most troublesome, though stories of grievous injuries were a close second.
By 14 she had second guessed herself enough that she chose to take up healing instead, something that had sparked her interest the more stories she heard. Faryn had all but abandoned her desire to be a rider. She might not have been meant to fly thread, but that didn't mean she couldn't still help. She transferred to Healer Hall to learn, and spent several turns honing her skill. She was diligent in her studies. graduating to Journeyman at 27. From there, she found herself transferring to Fort Weyr.

War injuries were replaced with Threadscore, and Faryn got to see firsthand how terrible it could be. But she knew by then she couldn't help everyone. Perhaps it was the volume of hopeless cases that hit her the hardest. Each new challenge served to further her experience, but they also slowly turned Faryn into a less optimistic and somewhat bitter woman. Still, she loved her work. If she cursed Golre's name in 2761, that was her business. Plus, she was hardly the only one who did. Work that turn was busier than ever. Golre's death wasn't the end of it though, not with Serapheth being notoriously violent. Faryn suspected she would have more on her hands with a gold like that leading Fort.

Fortune wasn't in her favor it seemed. The plague of 2764 and the catastrophic Threadfall following it were another blow to Faryn. It was likely the turning point that drove her to transfer to Semaca once it was established. She hoped - prayed - that the Summerlands would renew her love of healing. There were new things to discover in Semaca. While the severity of Threadfall injuries decreased, spotties posed a new and tremendous threat. The fall of 2768 brought floods, and for the first time in a long time Faryn felt somewhat helpless. Her skill wasn't in rebuilding. All she could do was patch the people of Semaca up and keep them strong enough to repair the flood damage.

The arrival of pirates weren't of much concern to her, though the spotties' ability to coordinate and learn was beginning to become worrisome. An entire weyrling class had been attacked, several young pairs injured. Would Semaca fall into a similar state of chaos that fort had experienced all those turns ago? Faryn genuinely hoped not.
