You Can Never Go Home Again [Fae]

The spires of High Reaches, where bronzes used to sit and secure their thrones. The wind is cold and the silence is sometimes overwhelming.

You Can Never Go Home Again [Fae]

TW: Mentions of death, injury, manipulation

Master Marland had gone home three days ago. He'd gotten on a dragon, without Norell, and flown back to Fort. He hadn't understood why she'd refused to come. She hadn't explained.

Because Norell had, for a few days, forgotten that words were weapons and life was a war, her brother's dragon had lost her eggs. Fort and High Reaches' alliance was shattered. Four candidates were hurt.

And worst of all, Norell was stuck here. She couldn't look her family in the eyes knowing that everything was her fault and she couldn't live at Fort, knowing when her secret came out (and secrets always came out) she'd be a pariah. All because she had been an idiot, who had thought that words were harmless and trust was free. Just like her mother.

Norell had given herself a candlemark to cry. And then, she'd started listening and asking questions.

Norell had learned some of their names, the people who'd ruined her life. Majima, whose lies she had fallen for. As many of the guards who had helped orchestrate this as she could remember. Stephen and Tenya, the people desperate enough to be riders that they didn't care that their dragons were stolen and their bonds were false.

She knew about the green weyrling, who had repeatedly and loudly claimed Majima had killed a man and order his wher to hurt her when she found out. Most people thought she was lying, because the Weyrleader backed Majima. Norell didn't. Majima had the resources to steal a clutch from the middle of Fort Weyr, hide them until they were ready to hatch and staff the Hatching Sands with well-trained men who too well-coordinated to have been hastily assembled. No one built a secret squad of guards if he didn't have the means and the motive to kill. And Weyrleaders lied. They were politicians. It was what they did.

She knew Stephen lived a quiet life, away from politics, causing little gossip.

And she knew Tenya had a brother. A brownrider who'd died in threadfall, who he spoke of constantly. So Norell had started a rumor in the Lower Caverns that Tensei had been a coward who'd died because he'd been afraid and tried to flee from Threadfall, breaking formation and risking his wing. The drudges and crafters weren't riders. They didn't know what had really happened. They hadn't seen.

It was a lie but Norell had never been ashamed to lie. It was what would hurt Tenya and that was all that mattered. He had helped ruin her life and now she was going to ruin his. It was only justice.

In the short time that Tenya and Adorath had been a team, Adorath had probably heard most of the stories Tenya had about his brother. She certainly knew enough to know that her rider had his own code of honor that he did his best to uphold. Tensei was one of the people Adorath would never get to meet, but she wanted to.

Adorath knew that things were weird and bad, but her Tenya was good. She had latched onto him in desperation, but all things considered, she had made a good choice. If she had been laid at High Reaches, he would have been her pick from the shell, probably. It was impossible to know, just like it was impossible to know what life would have been like if she had Impressed to her person at Fort. The white felt off balance, sometimes. She had questions that no one could answer, not even Tenya. Questions that maybe only her mother could answer, if she ever met her mother.

She was with Tenya the first time he heard the new rumor going about the Lower Caverns. About how Tensei was a coward, when Tenya knew that his brother died protecting one of his wingmates. Tensei had been an honorable man, a good friend, and a stellar brother. It was an utter injustice to have his name slandered like this.

The next time he heard the lie, Tenya had a lecture for the perpetrator. He delivered it with gusto, drawn to his full height and using his flattened palms to cut through the air in emphasis.

"...the younger brother to a most excellent older brother, and I will not have his name sullied like this!"

Adorath thought that maybe Tenya could have delivered his lecture with less shouting, but she couldn't fault his spirit. She approved of his intensity.

TW: Mentions of death

Norell tried very hard not to smirk as the whiterider yelled and waved his hands about. It seemed she'd struck a nerve.

Good.

Norell didn't care about his brother. His brother wasn't alive to worry about his name or reputation. But if he really had been a "most excellent older brother," she wondered how he'd feel about knowing Tenya had stolen a dragon that didn't belong to him. It didn't seem like something a "most excellent" person would approve of.

"I'm sure he was a very good older brother," she said with her best impression of sweetness, "But some people are different when faced with threadfall. At least that's what I've heard. Maybe you'll be different when you have to fly it too."

Norell could have told him his dragon should never have been his, but the white was standing right there. Adorath was a victim in all this, just like Norell was. And she was Neozeoth's daughter. This wasn't about her.
