Feelings [Sari]

Where many lives were shown glory and more given despair, no longer will Vizeth's tyranny haunt these sands.

Feelings [Sari]

"You angry. Hate Giant Egg." Ironwosk was standing outside of the hatching grounds, his tail flickering. He could sense the anger in Ironwood's heart. Ironwood frowned a bit, moving to tighten his grip on his hand.

"Are they willing to risk everything? For another Golre?" He growled, looking down at the white wher. The wher nodded, his tail twitching.

"Egg not welcome." The two did not even pay attention to anyone else.

Sigil, personally, didn't care much about the gold egg. It likely wouldn't hatch gold--that was how it had been in the past, after all. Gold egg arrives. Something else hatches. He hoped for that, after all. Shards, metallic dragons were so irritating, and he balked at the thought that they could lead. You're being closed-minded, Euraroth commented. Her own brother, Titabeth, had been in a 'gold' egg. He was a bronze, which wasn't much better in Sigil's mind, but still. Sigil should know better than to judge a dragon for their hide.

Maybe, maybe not. Sigil waited for Euraroth to reply, but she didn't. As the pair landed in the stands at the hatching sands, they looked over to the eggs musingly. Euraroth, for her part, turned towards a nearby white wher, offering a soft hum of a greeting. Quiet, but not unfriendly.

Sigil, however, was a bit unfriendly. "Got something you want to say?" He asked the wherhandler. Granted, sometimes handlers and dragons spoke aloud to their dragon or wher, but this man literally growled whatever he'd just said. He shrugged, his voice not full of malice, despite the slightly rude and almost confrontational words.

Ironwood was admittedly taken aback as he heard the other's voice. Ironwosk looked at him, flicking his tail a bit in annoyance. "You guard. Not fault." The other shot an annoyed look to the white wher before coughing. He adjusted his collar and looked at him.

"Do excuse my manners. I am not exactly the most thrilled about a certain egg that will hatch soon." Of course, why shouldn't he hate the gold egg? He grew up and was a candidate when Golre ruled and started the war. He had always hated the injustice that werylings and dragon candidates faced.

"What is stopping the dragon and their future rider to become the next Golre? Tensions are already high with Fort Weyr. What's stopping this egg from causing another war to break out?"

Sigil listened to the man's gripes, mulling over his own confused feelings around the gold. This is what he wanted, right? An actual future for his Weyr? But...Golre could not be repeated. "We stand in the gold's way. If the egg even hatches a gold. High Reaches won't allow another Golre." They couldn't...right? They had grown since, and wouldn't tolerate another Golre, no matter how strong Gold dragons were, no matter their compulsive abilities.

Still, he shrugged. "It might not even hatch gold. And if it does, we have plenty of people ready to keep a gold in line." He didn't feel so certain, though...

As the other spoke, Ironwood sighed a bit, "History is doomed to repeat itself if it is not corrected. Most of the candidates are young.. too young to remember Golre and what she's done. There is no stopping them from becoming just like her." He had noticed some of the candidates around too. There were a couple he did not trust with the gold.

"However, you are correct. We have plenty of riders and handlers who remember what Golre had done to the weyr to correct any sort of behavior like that again." He looked at Ironwosk, the white wher giving a nod before flicking his tongue out. "I have no doubt that, if the gold does cause problems, that the council will have her put down."

At least, he hoped.

Sigil arched an eyebrow. Ironwood seemed very passionate about this. Sigil didn't want to have an opinion--it was politics--but he couldn't help but shrug. "Yeah...but we need more fighting dragons. And that does mean a gold, for better or for worse." High Reaches was suffering casualties due to thinner wings. They hadn't had a gold in too long, and unfortunately, Greens and Garnets weren't doing enough.

Not that Sigil wanted an actual goldrider around. Maybe. He didn't really know how he felt about the whole political thing.

Sigil, however, would have agreed that it depended on the rider. Another Golre would bring the weyr to destruction, thread casualties or not. A war would be worse than not having gold. Some of these candidates...they seemed to be idiots, or worse. But...maybe Buzz. He'd trust his sister with a gold, more than anyone else, even if she wouldn't deserve the way people would likely treat her.

Ironwood sighed and looked at him, "While you are correct, eggs have been born from Garnets and Greens. Yes, that means we get a lack of larger dragons, but smaller dragons can still make up despite the larger dragons not being as frequent." Of course, he didn't really care about dragons.

He had always been a wher candidate, as soon as he turned eighteen, and when he met Ironwosk. The white wher looked at his handler, flicking his tongue out a bit as if to taste the air.

"Along with that, have you seen the candidates that will be at the hatching? Two of them are gold obsessed from what I understand and the rest are children."

Sigil nodded, not commenting that garnets and greens did not clutch as often, or as many. They had hardly any weyrlings, and a gold to bolster their ranks would be helpful. They may not need large dragons, despite roles in threadfall, but if they didn't have large dragons, they certainly needed more dragons. However, he was not about to comment this to a man who was so vehemently against a gold dragon. "Who knows? Gold eggs haven't hatched gold dragons in the past. We might just add a larger weyrling class to our ranks, gold or no."

"The candidates are...worrying. Some of them would be very concerning on a gold, especially." That, he had to admit. He knew a lot about the current candidates. The two that seemed to seek out metallics would be the worst for a metallic dragon. A few could make for just or kind goldriders, but not Adeline or Nova. "Not all of the others are children, though. There are some candidates who are more...quiet, that I've noticed." He shrugged again. A bit of hope, maybe. With an older candidate, at least, you knew what you were getting, while with a young one, they could mature into anything.

Kind of like a feline.

Ironwood nodded a bit, "That is correct. There was a clutch I remember that had three bronzes hatch from gold dragons. However, one of the bronzes was born with a firestone allergy." It seemed clear that golds were not guaranteed in a breeding that involved gold dragons. However, there were also a lot of false positives, something that could easily crush the hopes of anyone who wanted a metallic dragon, and a gold specifically.

As the other spoke, he looked at him, "While that is true, how can we be sure that the dragon will not influence their rider? Along with that, the gold could be influenced by the stories of Golre and her dragon. Even if the dragon is born of a good heart and has a good rider, there is still always the chance that they can turn and lead High Reaches into a new path of suffering."

That was a path Ironwood did not want to see again.

Sigil just shrugged. "It's a wait and see type of thing. I don't really see the point to worrying about it yet." Especially as he tried so hard not to get involved in politics. He didn't want to deal with that. Still, he glanced over to the gold egg. The thing that might throw his weyr into a time of uncertainty, chaos, unrest...and so on. Certainly, they'd be better off with a gold, numbers-wise, but he could only hope that she was a calm and collected gold, happy with her lot in life. He'd heard about Nebulaeth, and though she didn't clutch, Wyzeth. Two golds at Semaca who did not seem to upset the balance.

Maybe they'd get one of those. Not a Serapheth, not a Nornth, and DEFINITELY not a Vizeth. "Truth is, we don't know," he said, dryly. "Don't count your wherries before they hatch." Faranth knows that got him, personally, in plenty of trouble. Broody in nature, he always had something to complain about, or even worry about. But political things? The workings of the weyr? He was an informant, not a politician, not a leader!

"Indeed, it's all we can do is to wait and see what the dragon is like. Perhaps we will be lucky and have a decent gold. However, due to the negative feelings a lot of High Reaches shares, it may be that the gold may be exiled as a result."

Of course, Ironwood wouldn't mind if that happened. To him, a gold did not deserve to exist in High Reaches. Their last gold had caused severe problems that had upset the balance of the continent as a whole. To him, he felt the best idea was to have no gold.

All they had to do was wait and see, though.
