The Wretched [Merry]

Where many lives were shown glory and more given despair, no longer will Vizeth's tyranny haunt these sands.

The Wretched [Merry]

What about what might have been, could have been?

Nyrida liked coming to the hatching sands at times, perhaps because of the melancholy she felt here. It was a lovely place, bittersweet, a place where dragons emerged into the world. Yet...it was the site of her constant failure. She hadn't let herself hope much before, assuming herself unworthy of a dragon. She'd just been happy to stand, for the opportunity to see the dragons up close, to watch the miraculous gift of life.

Last hatching, however, she'd let herself hope. Among the first Impressions was Thalia, the woman she'd grown fond of. Both of the people she considered friends among the candidates had Impressed. And what of her? She didn't blame them for their Impression, and yet...she felt alone. Not quite abandoned, but alone. Who would she turn to? The new weyrlings would not have time for her, of that she was sure. While Jodarieth had chosen Thalia merely a sevenday before, Nyrida hadn't seen much of the woman or her large green.

Perhaps it wasn't intentional. Thalia was busy with lessons and caring for her young dragonet, and Nyrida had hardly sought her out in recent days. Better to let Thalia live her new life, one without Nyrida in it. It didn't occur to her that she was being dramatic.

As she watched the empty sands, she noticed someone else entering. A glance told her it was Thalia. Surprise marked her face. Had Thalia asked about her whereabouts, or was this simply a fated meeting?

The sands were empty. Back to normality, no eggs, no crowd of candidates. Just an aura of tranquillity, as Thalia walked across the hatching grounds with her dragon. She couldn't exactly leave her at the weyrling barracks, as she was but a baby. She'd wanted to come here for no specific reason, beyond it being quiet, and wanting to go for a walk somewhere during her break that was a little bit more peaceful than the main thoroughfare of the Weyr.

As something caught Jodarieth's eye, she pointed her out. Thalia. She moved her head in Nyrida's direction. Look. Thalia turned her head, looking straight towards the figure she saw on the sands. She almost couldn't believe it. Was it fate? Was it simply a coincidence? Was she seeing visions that weren't really there? "Oh..." Her eyes went wide, as she impulsively ran towards her. "Nyrida!" she called out, as the dragon tried to keep up with her. Thalia, slow down, for the love of Faranth.

Thalia stopped running, for a second, halting a few metres away from her, realising that she might've come across as a bit too forward, instead opting for a more refined greeting. "I, ah, hello." Shards. She'd already gotten excited. "What brings you out here then?

A small smile, barely more of an upturn at the edge of her lips, touched Nyrida's face. Thalia ran towards her, a gesture that Nyrida found endearing, her dragon trailing behind her. Thalia stopped a little bit away, and the smile on Nyrida's face faded. Had Thalia seen something when she'd closed in on Nyrida? Did she have something unappealing on her clothing? Had she pet any cats recently?

Perhaps this was a silly line of reasoning. She abandoned it for more realistic and important anxieties. What would Thalia say, what would they fill the space between them with. Was it in Nyrida's head, or would Thalia's Impression inevitably drive a wedge between them? Two different lives...and if Nyrida never Impressed, then...then what?

"Greetings, Miss Thalia, and Lady Jodarieth," she replied, offering a nod of her head to both in turn. "I was simply...taking a walk." Brooding. Moping. Ruminating. But she wasn't going to say that. "And the two of you...might I inquire the same?" A polite question, but one still asked with curiosity.

"Oh, yes, ah, we're taking a walk." Thalia looked around, fiddling with the hair that drooped below her shoulder. "It's quiet, and, uh..." Quick, think of words. "Well, I saw you here, and-"
She ran over because she wanted to talk to you. Jodarieth interrupted her, mid-sentence. She could tell that Thalia was struggling for words, and instead, decided to say them for her. She got a little excited. A light blush touched Thalia, as she tried to avoid eye contact.

"Well, that's not ENTIRELY a lie, but..." She sighed. "Listen, I- I just wanted to talk to you, maybe. And address the uh..." A slight eye-glance was given to Jodarieth. "Dragon. In the room." Pause. "Not that I was, uh, specifically looking for you, I just, found you by coincidence, I swear I'm not. Watching your every move, that would be weird."

Thalia's anxiety and stammering was met with an amused affection alongside caring concern. She offered a small smile, one with pursed lips. The dragon in the room...that could only mean one thing. "I understand," she said. "You do not need to worry. Should you feel as though our lives do not intersect any longer, this is acceptable. I will not be hurt."

Well, she would be, but she wouldn't say so.

"I am, of course, truly happy for you and Jodarieth. But should you wish to cease our friendship, at least until your graduation, I will accept your choice." Though...Thalia got excited? To see her? Hm. Perhaps she had misjudged the situation, out of her own self-doubt...but perhaps she had not. Thalia seemed too sweet, so perhaps it would be up to Jodarieth? The green seemed able to say the hard truths, ones that Thalia could not.

Nyrida inclined her head towards Jodarieth as well, indicating that her input would also be appreciated, even as her eye flicked from dragon to rider. Her eye rested on Thalia a few seconds longer, of course...

Thalia's eyes went wide and her hands leapt forwards, shoulders stiffening. "No, nonononono, that's not what I meant, ah... I don't want to stop being friends with you just because I have a dragon now, I quite like you, and uh, enjoy your company." She fiddled with the back of her head, not really maintaining eye contact with Nyrida, Jodarieth, or... anything, really. A light blush touched her face, and she didn't really bother hiding it. "I still want to visit you, in between lessons."

In between lessons, yes. The dragon shielded that thought from Nyrida, only letting Thalia hear it. She looked up at Nyrida - at this point, she was slightly bigger than when she'd last seen her; bigger than most Green dragons, still shorter than the riders. She likes you. Genuinely.

A soft smile crossed Nyrida's face for a moment, as her eye flickered between Thalia and Jodarieth. Relief flooded her, though she didn't show it. "I would be happy to continue our friendship, then. I do enjoy--and even prefer--your company," she admitted. "I do not wish to interfere with your training, but...perhaps, one day, I shall join you as a dragonrider." Even though she doubted that she would Impress.

Nyrida would no longer transfer for clutches, she would no longer stand for whers. She didn't want to admit the reason, but it was simple: she had a bit of a crush on a cute greenweyrling.

"I appreciate the reassurance. How is weyrlinghood treating you two?" She didn't add that she missed seeing Thalia in lessons, despite how happy she was for the woman.

"Yes, yes, I... I really like you. I dunno, I guess I just connected with you more than the other Candidates? Hell, I haven't even really... spoken to any of the other Weyrlings." It was true, she hadn't. Many of them were young, loud, or opinionated. It's true, she hasn't. She's hardly spoken to them outside of Weyrling lessons. Jodarieth had to interject. Thalia laughed sheepishly, as though there was a reason she hardly talked to the others. And it was because Nyrida wasn't one of them. "You'll definitely impress one day. I know you will! I hope you will."

As she listened more to her talk, the more she'd wished Nyrida impressed. She had a beautiful voice, but she knew she had to repress her feelings. After all, not only did she have to go through her own Weyrlinghood, but now probably Nyrida's too. "Weyrlinghood is uh... kind of hard work. You don't understand how high maintenance this girl is..." Jodarieth gave Thalia a look. ...You...cannot call anyone high maintenance, Thalia.

Nyrida did not quite know of Thalia's feelings, but she was starting to recognize her own. Thalia was lovely...but surely, it was not to be. Even if Thalia felt similarly--which Nyrida doubted--they lived different lives, and would for some time, if not forever. Surely, friendship was a different type of circumstance than Nyrida's romantic feelings.

"I hope you are right, but I am uncertain about my own chances of Impression," Nyrida replied, before Thalia began to talk about Jodarieth. "Ah, but I am sure she is well worth it. You seem quite reasonable, Miss Jodarieth. That said, I do not doubt the rigors of Weyrlinghood, especially with a green so large, who grows so fast."
