The Roles We Choose Ourselves [Gengen]

It had taken a long, long time to learn anything substantial about Stephen. He hadn't been born in the weyr and he didn't seem to do much besides work. But Norell had nothing but time. She didn't have friends or family here. All she had was the passing of days that brought her a little bit closer to candidacy and the scrolls Master Marland had left behind that she could only half understand.

Norell had never been a victim. She'd learned young that the way to survive was to be much trouble to be worth taking down. She'd never bothered to protect anyone else back then, because if they couldn't be troubled to protect her or themselves, they didn't deserve it.

She'd been wrong. Just because G'er didn't know how to fight didn't mean he didn't deserve anyone to fight for him.

It wasn't just Norell Stephen had hurt. So it wasn't just herself she was fighting for. This was all she could do for G'er.

At last, she'd found another Healer who knew his story. He was from High Reaches' Hold. He'd become a Healer young, because his sister was sick and he needed to save her. She'd died anyway.

It was almost enough to make Norell stop. Because if she'd been sick, she wasn't sure anyone would have gone to Healer Hall to save her. She doubted she'd have gone to Healer Hall to save them. He'd been a good brother.

But he had hurt her brother, because somewhere deep down, he apparently dreamed of being a dragonrider. He had hurt her. And Norell was done being a victim.

So she faked a letter on aged, faded parchment Master Marland had left behind. She signed it from a Master Healer who had worked at the same time. She wrote that she was concerned about Stephen's experiments on his sister. That the treatments were dangerous and untested and likely to kill her, but he was so obsessed with his own advancement, he didn't heed any warnings and he didn't seem to care.

The best lies always had a hint of truth. And the one thing Norell knew about Stephen was that his work was an obsession.

And then she left it, in a corner of the storerooms where it could have gone unread for turns but that she knew the apprentices were soon going to clean. Norell had no credibility yet. She had only the power she made herself.

Not many High Reaches healers knew his story. He didn't think it was important. It was a failure on his record, if anything. Motivation for doing the job he loved, yes, but a failure. If his sister had lived, perhaps he would speak of it more. But as it stood it was just something he didn't feel the need to burden others with. If he was asked, then he would explain.

And, suddenly, he was getting a lot of suspicious apprentices. Apprentices with accusations of horrible things. Experiments, obsession, accusations of murder. It was enough to make his blood run cold. He corrected them, with the same story that he rarely told. Most believed him, after consulting each other and finding his story to be the same each time. Some still gave him suspicious looks. One mentioned the letter, which he asked to see. His understanding of it transferred to Carth, and his eyes whirled with rage. This was a betrayal if he'd ever seen one! He lept up, trying to snap the letter up so he could shred it. Stephen only barely managed to lift it high enough.

"Carth- no! We need this. This is evidence. Whoever wrote this, its a link to them." He got an annoyed hiss in reply, Carth's tail lashing, but also understanding. Right, they needed to find the person behind this! So Carth could bite them! Stephen just pinched his nose, fighting the headache. "We aren't going to hurt them. We're going to ask why."

And then bite them! He replied, mindvoice shrill with laughter. Stephen heaved a sigh. He wondered, if it really came to that, if he could successfully hold Carth back. He wasn't very strong, but he was determined.

In the meantime, he asked the older healers that knew his story if anyone had been asking around. There weren't that many to ask, but it took longer than he would have liked. Eventually, he found the one that had been questioned, and learned of a weyrbrat, barely months from entering candidacy, who had asked some odd questions about him. Well, off for a kid who didn't know him. He got a description of the kid, and went about his business looking for them.

Norell hadn't expected Stephen to find her so soon. High Reaches wasn't Fort. She'd only been her a few sevendays. Almost nobody knew her. She mostly kept her head down and stayed out of the way. Maybe he was smarter than he looked. Maybe Majima had sent him looking, because he knew Norell knew the truth and wanted to erode her credibility.

Or maybe it was just a coincidence. Weyrs were small enough places that paths sometimes crossed without it having any meaning.

So Norell stayed where she was and kept writing on her hide. She didn't know why she bothered. She wasn't going to be an apprentice harper at High Reaches long enough for it to matter what the masters thought. She bit at her lip and took her best guess at the next note anyway.

It wasn't so difficult to narrow people down when he only had a few fellow healers to ask. That, and it was significantly more suspicious when someone asked questions about someone who, for the most part, kept to himself. At least, as much as a job as a healer would allow. He didn't socialize much outside of duty, and definitely not about himself.

Until most of the gossip among apprentices became about him, that is.

It wasn't so simple to spot an 'unassuming looking girl with brown hair and eyes', or so the description he had received said. It was a methodical approach, narrowing down possible matches by appearance, then age. This girl wasn't a candidate yet, but she was almost there. He couldn't set his age range too high or low, or he'd miss her.

Carth was no help. And honestly, Norell was just the next match check he made. Something struck him about her. Some subtle body language. Nervous, like she was hiding from someone. Or hiding something. Carth enthusiastically assumed everyone he considered was their target -his target, rather- despite Stephens efforts to dissuade him from his 'bite first ask questions later' plan.
