"Empty promises, all of them," T'rios grumbled to himself as he crumpled another flyer he had been handed. All of these politicians and wannabe leaders were full of talk and not action. Anyone could claim they could fix all of the problems at High Reaches, which seemed to be mounting higher and higher as the weyr grew more crowded with Holdless.

"I'm not voting for any of these fools unless they can prove they've actually done something useful to the weyr," he muttered to no one in particular. "You'd have to be an idiot to believe any of their flowery claims without the evidence to back it up."

Flowery claims, Amaata had quickly come to realize, were nothing to be believed at face value ... but there was one name being put forward that she recognized and found she trusted could do the job.

"I actually know one of them," she said shyly, her voice small. She wasn't familiar with Raev's campaign, but she didn't seem the sort to say anything she didn't mean. Ever.

Clearing her throat, Amaata continued, "Raev? Who's running for Wherleader. She's very practical."

"If you're eying the candidates with cynicism, I'd wager the voting process is doing its job and Pern is coming along rather nicely."

It was an elusive feat to see the healer disarmed of his usual glass of wine. But Sendaith had grown extra vigilant over the past sevenday. The blue might not be able to see his rider anymore, but the glare searing from his steely gaze practically plastered itself to his body. D'cara felt the incredible itch to peel off something that didn't exist.

Drink your k'lah, mine, he demanded.

The warm drink was not a suitable substitute. D'cara sighed into the mug. His head was throbbing, but whether it was due to fatigue over coping with the recent influx of ill holdless or due to withdrawal, he couldn't really tell. The medicine he'd taken was stubbornly refusing to come to his aid.

"If you're so negative about the ones standing to be elected, why not throw your hat into the ring? High Reaches could use a grizzled old ... " he waved his hand dismissively, " ... you."

T'rios eyed the young rider who had spoken up in defense of one of the candidates. "And what exactly has this Raev done? Practical leaders are better than those who spout nonsense, but without any concrete examples of her doing anything, she's not much better than the rest." Admittedly he would prefer someone with a practical worldview, but he also wasn't terribly concerned with what the wherhandlers were doing so long as they were on the ground when thread fell.

Then another rider spoke to him. He was drawing plenty of attention for someone who had just been muttering to himself. He'd need to remember to keep his thoughts internal next time. At being called old, his scowl deepened.

"I'm not running for a leadership position because I don't need the ego trip. My job is to fight thread, that's what I do. I don't need to deal with squabbles over what to do with the Holdless or managing resources." He crossed his arms and glared at the other rider. "And I'm not that old. You're not exactly a weyrbrat yourself."

Amaata eyed the blonde dubiously; he seemed ... grumpy. Both men were a hair shorter than she was herself, but not so much as to make her feel uncomfortably like she was looking down on them, thankfully. "It shouldn't be about an 'ego trip'; people going for these positions should genuinely want to help the Weyr." She had faith that was the case for Raev, but she hadn't had the opportunity to meet any of the others.

"Raev is good with her wher, who is, ah, highly energetic, and she wants to help things run efficiently. She's the only person who bothered to warn me about the winters here when I transferred." She didn't have a huge list of accomplishments to spout off for Raev, but she did know enough to make some sort of attempt to defend against the notion that she did nothing. "She's very competent."

As for the matter of resources and dealing with the new formerly Holdless population - "You might not want to 'deal with squabbles' but someone has to or the Weyr will devolve into chaos."
