[Nine] Different Beast

The holdless who had set these traps were no trappers. At least, no trappers of this land, of mountains and spring snows and narrow rocky crevices.

Aragon did not know how they had fed themselves, in the times Before. But holdless hunted as they did everything else- in secret. With small, makeshift traps, easily hidden in the shadows.

Not iron contraptions in the middle of a public roadway, big enough to wound a runner (of the two legged or four legged variety) taken unaware.

Aragon knew why they had claimed expertise, he thought.

There was nowhere a holdless man could safely tread, outside the walls of High Reaches Weyr.

The cliffs could feel as much prison as sanctuary.

So he said nothing, as he disarmed one of their more poorly placed devices.

In the silence of a warm summer's morning, he heard it. A growling, from the underbrush.

A predator's growl.

Aragon tapped Dukat's arm to draw his attention, before following the sound, palming his knife.

There were children and civilians here, come to play at being a hunter. He would not let them become the prey.

Image

It was a wher. Brown and skinny, eyes squinted against the light of day, one leg entangled with a large metal trap it appeared to have dragged some distance across the plain, to this one spot of shade.

Aragon look towards Dukat. He was a wherhandler. More equipped than Aragon to know what to do next.

CW: Suggestion of euthenasia

Advocating for the holdless to stay at High Reaches had been an excellent decision, as far as Dukat was concerned, if only to have Aragon around. The man was useful, as well as an excellent example of what a family man should me, proof that anyone was redeemable if they simply put in the appropriate effort. Case in point, he was helping to clear out the ill-placed traps some of his fellow holdless had strewn about the road. Dukat was a competent man, but he was not a trapper. He first had to figure out a trap before he could disarm it, while Aragon had apparently seen all of these things several times over. It probably also helped that Aragon wasn't nocturnal. Dukat couldn't stifle all his yawns at being up so late past his bedtime, but he was enjoying the sunlight regardless.

Dusk, naturally, had already gone to bed. He hadn't seen the point in clearing the road if there was no guaranteed reward at the end of it. Just as well, as far as Dukat was concerned. The bronze would've gone after every piece of bait in the traps he could, and while Dukat could control him, a battle of wills this late in his day was not his idea of a good time. It'd either end in a raging headache or a trip to the healers as Dusk broke loose and charged headfirst into a snare.

The growl grabbed Dukat's attention, though. He'd recognize a wher's growl anywhere, and was on edge even before Aragon tapped him. The man was going towards the source, of course...Dukat grit his teeth. "Aragon, don't be a fool," he hissed, voice low. "I've already summoned Dusk, wait for the bronze." Even together, the pair couldn't hope to take on a wher for long without serious injury, not even so much as a white...

And then he actually saw the creature and winced. It was a true feral, its underfed physique a clear sign of that. Judging the age of a wher one wasn't bonded to was always tricky, but the lack of gray on his muzzle indicated there was still plenty of turns left in him. But he was definitely a full adult, and while the wilds aged everyone prematurely, the scars on this beast told him that this wasn't some welp newly out of wherlinghood either.

Dukat let out a heavy sigh. "We should put this creature out of its misery," he said, readying his knife. He didn't want to, but it would be the kindest thing for it. Still, he hesitated trying to rouse Dusk again. Dusk would be a bully about subduing this creature, and it deserved a gentler death than that.

Dukat was right.

Aragon was a fool.

Back when they were roaming the wilds, he'd have given the exact same admonishment, to anyone who thought of taking a wher on with a knife.

Smart holdless fled from the sight of dragonkin.

And Aragon wouldn't have survived this long if he didn't know when to back down.

Over a turn at the weyr had dulled his edge. Before- he'd have known to mind his own business and save his own skin.

The sounds had clearly come from something large and dangerous. He could hardly fight a bear or a wolf either.

"You're right. We should wait for help," he grunted, looking over the wher.

But to kill it like Dukat suggested...

If Dukat advocated the solution, it was clearly what weyr ethics and procedures dictated. But it just didn't feel right.

Whers talked. They were sentient. They were at least kind of people. Weird people...but people.

Letting one die felt an awful lot like murder.

And Aragon already had enough blood on his hands.

Forsk weyr rules.

"He's healthy enough, except for the leg," Aragon reasoned, looking over the wher struggling to free himself from the trap, "He's still fighting. He wants to survive."

It wasn't the wher's fault someone had been careless where they put their traps.

"Doesn't seem dangerous either. He's not lunging for us or stalking the kids," Aragon assessed, even though he didn't actually know all that much about whers, "See if Dusk can convince him to let me spring him."

Could weyr whers even talk to the wild ones? Forsk if Aragon knew. Maybe that forsked up hivemind would be enough to save this one today.

Dukat nodded sagely when Aragon agreed with him, pleased that the man saw sense.

And then the man contradicted him and Dukat raised an eyebrow. It was good for a man to have a spine. How else was he supposed to hold himself upright and stand tall, after all? But Dukat knew what he was talking about. Aragon did not. "It's not just about the leg," he said. He was being patient with the man. It wasn't his fault that he didn't know better, after all. "He's too skinny as it is. He can't afford to miss meals, and he will as he's recovering, because he won't be able to hunt for himself. It will be slow and painful. And he's already in pain as it is, beyond the injury to his leg. Whers are nocturnal, too much sunlight is painful to them without protective eye gear. Even in the shade there, the sunlight will be too bright for him." Dukat shook his head. "Believe me, Aragon, I do not suggest it to be cruel. It is meant as a kindness. He cannot care for himself, and we simply do not have the resources to care for an unbonded wher."

"He is not dangerous because he is too much pain to want to move from his current spot," Dukat said with a sigh, trying (and failing) not to get exasperated with the man's hesitance. "But the moment either of us attempts to draw near, I'm certain that we will see it attempt to draw blood. And the only thing Dusk will do when he arrives is go for that brown's throat. He does not like intruders, and he will be more ruthless and far less caring than I about ending the brown's life."

Dukat turned fully to Aragon. "To put the creature out of its misery mercifully, I need your full attention and cooperation, Aragon. I cannot have your hesitation. It could get us both hurt." He put a hand gently on the other man's shoulder. "If this is too much for you, my friend, I certainly understand, and I will call other handlers to help me in this. You must be sure of your decision, though. I cannot have you wavering either way and causing an injury." It would delay the beast's suffering if he had to fetch different help, but he would rather that than risk it taking a chunk out of anyone's flesh.

When Aragon had tried to run towards his own death, High Reaches had chased him down and forced their kindness and mercy onto him. Aragon was a branded man, a murderer, with no particular value to the weyr. And yet- they had healed him and fed him and all but trapped him in the warmth of their halls.

Aragon wasn't blind or deaf- he saw the weyr's overcrowded caverns and heard the whispers around corners that their resources were stretched thin enough taking cared of their own, questioning whether it had been wise to extend their aegis of protection to people like Aragon. But no man could spend a turn in the weyr without seeing how much they valued their whers. Aragon would have assumed the same persistent, stubborn generosity he'd been shown would extend to this creature, injured and half-starved and barely able to open his eyes against the light.

Aragon knew what it meant- to be hurt and hungry and afraid and alone. To be cussed-stubborn enough to want to damn the odds and survive.

This wher's pack was clearly long gone. And yet he was still fighting. He wasn't ready to give up and die and didn't want their damned mercy kill.

"What if one of us bound him? There's no shortage of handlers about," Aragon asked, mind fixing on the one out in Dukat's otherwise absolute pronouncement. He knew there were ways to bind an adult wher- that some of High Reaches' own handlers had accomplished the feat.

He did not know if the offer was a kindness- to force a creature used to freedom to bend to human will. Maybe Dukat's way was the more merciful.

Aragon had killed before- the drunken rider, hapless animals caught in his traps, wild beasts stalking his boys. He was not squeamish or innocent or naive. Kill or be killed. He could ill afford to dwell on mawkish, indulgent sentimentality. He was no dragonrider.

But this felt wrong.

The kind of man his sons could be proud to call father wouldn't stand back and do nothing.

Dukat balked slightly at Aragon's suggestion. "Well of course it's possible to bond to him," Dukat said. "It's no more difficult than offering it your blood, but...Aragon, look at it," he said. "Who would want to when there's plenty of wher eggs that are much easier to acquire? Bonding to a wher upon its hatching is much easier, much healthier for both parties. Besides, do you really think a creature that feral would agree to bond to anyone here? He would no doubt see that as imprisonment. It would maul someone before it ever even considered consenting to a bond."

He sometimes forgot that Aragon was not educated in the ways of civilization, that things Dukat took for granted the other man was not aware of. It didn't even occur to him that Aragon wouldn't know how a wher bonded to a human, but that was what a Hold's sorry excuse for an education and turns upon turns of exile would get a person, he supposed. Aragon deserved compassion, not ridicule in this moment. "Believe me, my friend, this is not what I want, but I truly do not see another way that would not make the situation worse."

Aragon should have known better than to be disappointed.

The weyrs had loomed above him all his life- full of important, special people and their important, special bonds. High Reaches' pity for the holdless didn't mean they weren't snobs who thought themselves too good to tie themselves to a common stray.

Aragon saw no reason to doubt Dukat's word that the weyr's handlers would kill this wher, before tainting themselves with the association. The choice would never be called murder. In the eyes of the harpers, the dictates of the weyr were always just. It was simply the natural order of the world, how the weyrfolk had always been. To forget because they showed him an ounce of kindness was naive.

If he wanted to save this wher, he would have to do it himself.

He had no good name to uphold and no glorious future awaiting him. All he had were his sons and his freedom.

His sons would be fine. Even if he was banished again, Lanselot and Dukat would see his sons protected. He trusted that.

His freedom on the other hand? Whers weren't dragons, but they had their own hivemind, webbing across the weyrs and great holds of Pern. Aragon didn't want this wher and his collective living in his head and he wished nothing less than to see all his crimes laid bare, before this wher and all the minds connected to his.

But Dukat was right. He had to make a choice. There was no room for hesitation.

Maybe this was to be his atonement. His mind and his freedom to save a wher, in exchange for the dragon his crime had sent to eternal darkness.

He took a step closer, slowly and cautiously, sure to make plenty of noise.

"I'm not here to hurt you. I'm going to set you free," he said, keeping his voice as soft and gentle as he could manage. The wher turned towards the sound, with a pained, pleading whimper.

Whether the wher wanted to bond or not- Aragon would free him. No one should die in chains.

"I'm going to offer you my blood. Take it if you want to come with me, to somewhere there's food and healers," he continued. He wasn't sure the wher understood his words, but it let him approach and stood still and tense under his hands, as he pried the green-stained trap from its leg. Aragon could all but feel it assessing him.

"If you'd rather seek your pack," he whispered, softly so Dukat couldn't hear, "You need to run. Quickly, far from here. Don't stop, until all the humans are out of sight or out of...scent, I guess."

The wher didn't flee, perhaps because it didn't understand or maybe because it was simply too hurt to move.

Aragon's fingers were clumsy and trembling, as he ran his knife along the underside of one arm. He held out the jagged, messy cut beneath the wher's snout.

As the wher lapped at the blood, images flashed through Aragon's mind. Of the wher's pack. His golden mate. His wherlets. The younger, stronger bronze that drove him out. Of the months he had wandered alone in the mountains, searching desperately to find a trace of their scent again.

Ragosk, a voice spoke in Aragon's head, raspy and out of practice, as the wher leaned his exhausted head against him.

Aragon, Aragon said, as he scratched Ragosk's eyeridges, the way Herring always liked, before draping his coat over his head, to try to block out the sun.

"Anyone have an extra pair of goggles?" Aragon called out to Dukat and any other wherhandlers still with the main group.

"What are you doing?" Dukat hissed when Aragon stepped towards the wher. "You can't take this thing on yourself." But when Aragon said he was going to offer the wher his blood, Dukat let out an irritated sigh. "Aragon, please, be sensible. You're better than this," he said. Better than a raggedy, flee-bitten, scrawny wher. Not worth a bronze or gold, of course, but if Aragon wanted to rehabilitate his image, he should get an infant from a prestigious bloodline. "If you want a wher that badly, I can get you an egg. You don't have to stoop to this."

But the man was determined, apparently. Dukat let out another hefty sigh. At Aragon's question, he searched his pockets. "I don't have mine on me," he said. "Give me a moment." He trotted off to where several people had left trap making supplies. There was rope and tarps, and he cut a few strips off of one of the tarps and a few coils of rope and trotted back to Aragon. He held them out to the branded man. "You can cover his eyes with these," he said, though he didn't look - or sound - particularly happy about this situation. "And I grabbed some extra so you could tie off his paw, slow that bleeding." He had no love for this wher, but he did not wish the brown's death on Aragon. The loss of a wher didn't hurt as badly as that of a dragon, but it was still not pleasant to feel something dying in your mind, as far as he understood it.

Dusk, summon a dragon to transport an injured wher to the infirmary, Dukat ordered his bronze, bearing down with all his will to force the creature to comply. Dusk grumbled, annoyed at being roused from sleep, but he complied. Mostly because it didn't require him to get out of bed. Wher need help. Is here. He projected the location along with his summons, and then went back to sleep.

Dukat focused back in on the here and now. "I've had Dusk summon a dragon to bring your...brown back to the Weyr," he said, just barely refraining from calling it anything disparaging. "I doubt very much it can walk well on that leg, and I shouldn't like to see it try."
