She keeps her red hair cut above her shoulders, with bangs across her forehead. When she has a day to herself, she favors light pants and sleeveless tops, adapted to the Semacan weather and a rider's life.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Raised a Lord Holder's daughter, L'ani remains polite and courteous to most, considering this part of her duty as a rider and a lady. She is quick with a compliment for a job well done and tries her best not to tread on fragile egos and dignities, especially of potentially useful people. Which isn't to say L'ani is particularly sweet or kind. She's a practical and dutiful woman, without much patience for people's shards or for difficult or useless people in general. She merely prefers to try to subtly (or not-so-subtly) maneuver her way into getting people to do what she wants rather than openly picking a fight. She can at times be catty or passive aggressive. She also has no real qualms about talking frankly about people who irritate her behind their back. It isn't her job to protect their reputation or enlighten them to their failings if they insist on acting like fools. L'ani truly relaxes enough to discard the armor of manners only with the people she loves and trusts, particularly her family, whom she loves enough to tell right to their face when they're being idiots.
L'ani takes her duty as a rider seriously. She goes where she is bid and does her best to complete the missions she's given. She is perfectly willing to enlist the help of others when she feels it necessary. So long as the job is done, she has fulfilled her purpose. She is devoted to the protection of those around her, including her wingmates, and does her best to keep them safe. L'ani isn't a particularly sentimental women. She choses not to dwell on loss or hardships, preferring to focus on the things she can still change.
While L'ani loves her family and cares for what friends she has, she is often not a particularly good friend or sister. Her focus on her job as a rider takes priority over most else. She's the sort of person who would miss her best friend's wedding for a routine practice. Personal commitments simply don't mean very much to her and she can be unintentionally cruel through neglect, if not intent. She is often not particularly sensitive to the needs or limitations of others, including her dragon.

BIRTHPLACE: Rosegarden Hold (Minor Hold beholden to Fort)
HISTORY:
Laniaitte was born the fourth child and only daughter to Lord Baurendouin and Lady Francine of Rosegarden Hold, a minor hold beholden to Fort. She had a peaceful, happy childhood. She loved her family and diligently attended to the lessons of both her harpers and her parents, on what was expected of her as a young lady of Rosegarden.
When Laniaitte was 19, she attended a gather at a minor hold beholden to Telgar with her mother. The lord's second son had been proposed as a possible marriage match for her. Laniaitte wasn't particularly fond of the young man, finding his romantic overtures insipid and trite. Laniaitte was more interested in a dragonrider also attending the gather, full of stories of courageously fighting thread and defending Pern. Seeing her interest, he introduced her to his dragon, who saw in her the potential to be a candidate herself.
Laniaitte accepted and went to Telgar Weyr. It was far from home, but Telgar Weyr had searched her and so that was where she would stand. Two turns and several clutches later, Laniaitte, now L'ani, Impressed to green Haillenarth, a sweet dragon who clearly needed L'ani around to provide both common sense and some drive.
The pair made it through weyrlinghood without issue and graduated into the wings. L'ani took well to life as a rider, taking pride in her role as a defender of Pern. She still loved her family, but kept in touch only via the occasional letter, not even returning home when her brother died. It simply didn't seem very important, compared to her life at the weyr. She sent a routine letter acknowledging that she'd received the news and understood it and never considered that might not be enough. They had each other to take comfort in.
Haillenarth never particularly enjoyed fighting Thread, finding it frightening and stressful, but fighting thread was what dragons and riders did. L'ani pushed her dragon and her dragon fought. All seemed well, until Haillenarth learned a wingmate was transferring to Semaca, to help build things rather than fight. Haillenarth wanted to do that too. L'ani refused, not seeing what use a rider was who didn't fight, until she started getting letters from said former wingmate about the state of Semaca. The weyr was constantly under siege by spotties, neighbored with pirates and seemed generally incapable of managing itself. Clearly, Semaca needed good riders more than Telgar did. When Haillenarth asked again, L'ani agreed to transfer.
She was rather surprised to see Francel was already there. She vaguely recalled it had been mentioned in a letter from home she'd only half read and not paid much attention to. But he seemed fine and clearly wasn't in need of any help, so they could both continue doing their respective duties.
