FULL APPEARANCE: At twenty, G'er has grown into a handsome young man, although he remains on the ganglier side for a rider. He still has too many freckles and usually a bit of a sunburn. His hair is perpetually a mess, always seemingly a bit too long, no matter how recently it's been trimmed. G'er dresses mostly in things he's gotten from the weyr stores. He prefers fairly casual clothes that are easy to run in and likes his boots a little too big so they don't pinch his toes.
Most of Geromal's clothes are obviously homemade and not particularly well. The cloth is of poor quality, the stitches are too thick, the colors are faded and just about everything he owns has been patched over many, many times. He sometimes wears better quality, weyr made clothes to lessons, but in his free time, he prefers to stick to the things he brought from home. They're comfortable and he can move in them, without feeling too guilty if he tears or stains something. Plus they remind him of home. He goes barefoot or in simple sandals when he can get away with it as he absolutely hates the wher hide boots he had to get to be allowed on the sands.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
G'er has a natural gift for finding the good in people. He's a genuinely kind person, through and through, who tries to see the best in the world and his life and to appreciate what he has. While he's more tentative than he once was, and has learned to look before he leaps, he remains open to change and new experiences, wanting to experience as much as he can in the time he has. His sense of humor is gentle and teasing. He's grown into a sense of easy self-assured confidence, but it's less arrogance and more trust that other's gazes will be as nonjudgmental as his own. He likes most people he meets and forgets not others are as forgiving of foibles.
G'er looks back to his childhood with fondness and nostalgia. He knows from his family that it wasn't so great for others, but he was happy then and life was simple and it's hard not to miss it a little. He loves his mother and his siblings and Neozeoth. He enjoys knitting and daring flying and enjoys the company of many of his fellow riders.
G'er is terrified of losing still more people and feels powerless to stop it. He'll take any additional losses that do come hard. He worries about this a lot and his fretting can cross the line into an annoyance. The time travelers do not help. The idea that one of his family could be lost in time is one more thing to stay up at night over.
While by default kind, G'er can hold a grudge and has never learned to fully accept that sometimes bad things happen and it's no one's fault. He wants someone to blame when things go wrong and when stressed, will lash out at people who don't deserve it. G'er likes having an easy answer and a meaning to why things are how they are and can jump to conclusions. He's still suspicious of traditionalists, criminals and most people from High Reaches after the theft of Neozeoth's eggs and will take a lot for him to warm to anyone with ties to those camps. He's a bit paranoid that Majima has people even at Fort, even though he doesn't fully understand who he is or how his system works.
G'er doesn't know how to handle his anger and sadness and will bottle it up, until he explodes at the nearest convenient target, whether or not they deserve it. If G'er can't be happy, he will at least try to be stoic, but he isn't very good at stoicism. G'er remains someone led more by his heart and emotions than his mind and he is fairly impulsive.
G'er is strongly opposed to the traditionalist movement within Fort Weyr. Every pair and rider should be valued, no matter the dragon's color or the rider's gender. He doesn't trust their movement and worry they were escalate from words and politics and do something terrible. He is quick to lose his temper when faced with traditionalists notions. He also deeply distrusts High Reaches and everyone with ties to that weyr.
G'er is not the most diligent of wingriders. He tries, for Neozeoth's sake and because he wants to be a good wing member to his colleagues, but he gets distracted easily. There's always something fun and exciting going on and he wants to see it all. That said, in a crisis, he will chip in and do his share. He cares and always wants to help, even if he's not always very good at it.
He thinks his dragon is the best thing in the world although her sense of duty and ambition often comes into conflict with his more laid-back attitude. He does all the training and work she assigns him, because he doesn't want to disappoint her or make her sorry she picked him.
Geromal isn't used to the ways of the weyr. That much is immediately clear. He walks, talks and dresses like the rural holder he is and sometimes can't stop himself from staring at something particularly strange, whether it's a particularly oddly colored dragon or a rider covered in thread scores. He can't read or write very well, struggles with the more unfamiliar of his chores and asks questions that make the weyrborn children stare at him like he's lost his head. But he handles it all with a smile and a laugh. It's a whole new world to explore and learn and that's exciting! Even if he does think things are better the way they do them back home. Why does he need to bathe everyday? That's stupid. And what's wrong with asking that wingleader why he's limping? They're neighbors, aren't they? And neighbors are supposed to care about each other. Not all of his misunderstandings are quite so benign. Ideas like women leading and men dating other men strike him as alien and odd, as things he knew existed from rumors and stories but never thought to actually see. Because doesn't want to hurt anybody, he tries not to voice these opinions out loud. It's not their fault they're doing it all wrong. They were just never taught better.
Eager and enthusiastic to explore, Geromal can be found getting into just about everything. Whether he succeeds or fails, he doesn't take it too hard. He knows he's the new kid and that's okay. He's here to learn and make friends and get lots of great stories to tell back home if he doesn't Impress. The one thing he doesn't like is lessons. They're boring and hard and everyone acts like he's an idiot just because he's not sure how to spell "achievement". Why does he need to know that anyway? What does that have to do with riding a dragon? Yes, Geromal isn't exactly the a top student, but he tries. Most of the time. When there's not something better to do. He hands his homework in whenever he remembers, okay? It's not his fault there was a fire lizard flight. He's never seen one of those before!
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Mother: Essamalia (deceased)
Stepmother: Relli
Father: Geronor
Sister: Essa of Bronze Gectusith
6th of 11 children, 5 full siblings, 5 half
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: N/A
BIRTHPLACE: One of the outlying farming holds surrounding Fort
HISTORY: Geromal grew up as pampered and cosseted as a farmbrat could be. The sixth child of Geronor and Essamalia, he never knew his mother, who died giving birth to him. His father worried about him growing up without a mother, but his fears proved unfounded. Geromal's older siblings lavished love and attention on him, their mother's youngest child. And when his father remarried and his stepmother Relli had more children? Well he loved them all too. They were family, after all, and more family could never be bad.
Geromal stumbled into the fields practically as soon as he could walk and was soon cheerfully "helping" with whatever chore he could find. He loved being outside and using his hands and taking care of his family and couldn't imagine a better world to be brought into. He missed his sisters and brothers, as they were married off one by one, but they brought new little nieces and nephews for him to play with and one day he wanted a family just like that of his own.
And then things changed. It was his third sister, Essanora's, turn to marry and his father found a match for her they all liked, a man named Liotan. He had a runner he let Geromal ride and was even going to let them keep and told great stories and tossed Geromal up in the air whenever he asked. But Essanora didn't want to marry him, even though their parents had already agreed to the match and backing out now would humiliate the whole family. Geronor refused to let her back out, because that wasn't how things were done, but instead of accepting his decision she ran away. And took the runner with her.
Things weren't so good after that. Liotan's family was furious and demanded full repayment for the runner, which was more than the family made in a year. They had to sell all their herdbeasts to pay it back. And there were whispers and rumors. Nobody wanted to marry one of Geronor's children anymore or share their chores or help keep food on their table when the harvests weren't enough. And so they began to scatter.
Geromal's oldest brother left for Fort Hold, taking his wife and children with him, promising to send money when he could to help them survive. His older sisters left for other holds, where the stories hadn't spread. But his father, his stepmother and the younger children stayed and they survived. Times were hard, but between the money his brother sent, their smaller numbers and the crops they still had, they survived and managed to keep the worst of their troubles from the children. But Geromal knew that there were troubles, they were Essanora's fault and Essanora was probably dead and even if she wasn't, it was better for everybody to think she was. Because she was trouble.
When the search dragons came and saw something in Geromal, his parents were relieved and sent him off without a second thought. Sure, the weyr was distant and strange, but he'd be fed and educated there and have a chance for a better life. Geromal went without complaint because he wasn't stupid, no matter what the Harper said. And what could be better than being a dragon rider?
