FULL APPEARANCE: Maui is a magnificent man in his own mind. To hear him tell it, he's as handsome as the first weyrleader, stately as a lord, with a voice befitting a harper. In actuality, he's a large, beefy man, his build a mix of muscle and fat. He wears his hair long and his features are broad and strong. His skin is tanned all over as he frequently trains in minimal attire and is often found shirtless and shoeless, whether or not it's appropriate to be at the time.

To hear Maui tell it, he's a legend, deeply involved in and to thank for every event of consequence that's ever come to pass. He has boundless faith in his own importance and abilities and is always trying to fashion himself the hero. It often seems he cares more for glory than any deeper moral principles, as whether or not he ACTUALLY involves himself in any given conflict comes down to a single calculation- What's best for Maui?

Maui is selfish to the bone. He doesn't much care about anyone else and will stab most people in the back in a heartbeat if it means furthering his own cause. He doesn't have many qualms about stealing from or hurting others. He may want to be seen as the hero, and may truly believe he's heroic, but his own actions are decidedly amoral. Until Tattoo gets involved, that is. His decidedly more moral firelizard can usually be counted on to keep him from doing anything TOO monstrous.

Beneath the arrogance and bluster, Maui continues to feel the loss of his parents and foster parents and some part of him is convinced he's not good enough. Maybe he really could be a hero or at least a decent person if given a cause or partner to believe in. Or maybe he's ever bit the self-centered asshole he acts. Hard to say.

Maui never knew his parents. Maybe they were war refugees, maybe they were holdless, maybe they were just assholes. Who knows? Whoever they were, they abandoned him when he was just a babe, leaving him to the sea. Perhaps he would have died, but before he could drift too far from the shore, he was rescued by a guard from a nearby hold who took him home and presented him to the lord and lady of the place.

The lady holder, Lady Tefiti, had been struggling to conceive a child of her own and so she gladly agreed to care for the infant, whom she named Maui. Even as she did finally bear babes of her own blood, Tefiti and Teka continued to care for Maui. He was raised in the lap of luxury, with everything a child could desire.

But he wanted more. He wanted recognition and praise and fame. He would never be a lord- but that didn't mean he couldn't be a legend. He took to giving extravagant gifts to the poor of his hold, not because he cared for them, but because it won him praise and lavish thanks. His foster parents tolerated it. Until he went too far.

One day, Maui stole Tefiti's prized emerald necklace, a family heirloom passed down for generations, and gave it away to a couple as a wedding gift. When his foster father learned what he'd done, he was furious and banished him from the hold, arranging for Maui to go to Semaca weyr. He wanted to be a hero? Fine. Let him fight thread and risk his life like every other gloryhound on Pern.

Mausk is 100% garnet - there's no mistaking her to be anything else. Her entire body is a very bright violet color that stands out no matter the season or setting. The majority of her body is made up of a variety of what look like very thin brush strokes or lines; together, it creates an almost furry texture to the eye. This deviates in her wings, becoming feather-like in appearance. All of these lines are made up of three different shades of purple; the brightest is almost magenta, while the darker streaks are indigo in tone. The color becomes misty around all of her limbs and the tips of her tail.

PERSONALITY:

Mausk is a phoenix in her own right, a proud and bold creature who refuses to back down and shines brightly. She is a strong personality, but she doesn't care whether she's hard to swallow or not. She simply chooses to carry on and follow her goals, not letting anything slow her down. She's strong and independent, requiring no supervision or babysitting on projects or lessons. She is fierce, a warrior, and proud to say so.

Nothing can deter her, and she has a gift for bouncing back from any obstacle. She is particularly healthy, she is confident, and she believes in herself; good luck keeping her down! She is very knowledgeable for a wher, and enjoys educating and helping her fellow Weyr occupants. She is very good at finding burrows. She also enjoys visiting those people who end up in the Infirmary, having excellent bedside manner.

Voice: Forceful and proud, her voice is strong and feminine with a touch of authority to it.

Mask is a blue as pale as ice, the cold broken only by slashes of a deeper royal blue like the marks of some ancient warrior. He is wrinkled and bulky, as a wher should be, a strong, sturdy creature who still manages to strike with surprising speed when the urge takes him. Mask will take easily to swimming, always well at home in the water he cuts through with deadly grace.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Mask is a cold wher, tactical and brutal, almost inhuman. He doesn't much care about right and wrong or personal attachments to this world. He simply is, the latest manifestation of some primal force of nature. All whers are, he suspects, he's just closer to the source than most.

Mask is rigid and commanding. He prefers to set the tone for all things and his little patience for those that waste his time. He will fight for the weyr without argument but one gets the sense it's less that he cares and more that he likes the fight. He doesn't hold much affection for his handler but he is very fond of Mausk. She is his opposite in all ways and that is something he can respect. He is also very fond of the pampering he gets as a bound wher and enjoys having Maui to do his bidding and oil all the hard to reach bits.

TATTOO/MINI MAUI

NAME: Officially Mini Maui, but usually just called Tattoo

APPEARANCE
COLOR: Brown
FULL APPEARANCE: A slender firelizard with dramatic markings, Tattoo is a small example of his color. Nicknamed "Tattoo" after the striking pattern on his hide, he's not the most active of flits. He's usually found on Maui's shoulder and rarely flies more than a few feet from his side.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Tattoo does however have a sense of drama. He may not be one for daring chases, but he's an expressive little fellow in his own way, communicating with movements that sometimes look almost like dancing. He's a kind flit who wants to do the right thing by everyone, flit, dragon, wher or human, and he'll usually drag Maui along for the ride. Small he may be, but he usually gets his way in the end.
