FULL APPEARANCE: An average looking girl of ordinary height and build, Poppin dresses to blend in with the crowd. She's never much seen the point of developing a personal style and prefers to be inconspicuous. Her clothes are usually fairly simple and she never wears jewelry, as she comes from a family of modest means. She generally wears her hair in a ponytail and neither cowers nor struts, adopting an unassuming gait that gives few hints to her character.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Poppin is practical and intelligent, willing and able to do what it takes to survive. She feels little obligation to society and its mores as a whole. She does what's best for her and her friends. She's not always the most diligent of people, as if she doesn't see the point in something, she'll do the bare minimum to get it over with. She has little respect for authority figures and while she won't openly mouth off as she prefers not to get in trouble, she won't go out of her way to please them and will disobey them when she thinks she can get away with it. They don't care about her, so why should she care about them?
Poppin is actually a fairly sweet girl, to her own peer group and those she considers friends. As she sees it, they're all in the same boat and ought to stick together. The rest of Pern may be stacked against them or indifferent at best, but they're her family, sort of, and she'll do what's best for them. She's eager to make friends with people who don't think themselves above her and is quick to defend those less capable than herself. You need someone's homework to copy? Poppin's your girl. Want someone to clean extra latrines? They have drudges for that- don't they?
While she tries to protect those weaker than her, Poppin does have her blindspots. To her, certain people such as drudges are simply there. When she bends the rules, she rarely considers the trouble it will cause people outside her immediate orbit, as she's prone to myopism. Her group-currently the candidates-that's important. Everyone else? They're someone else's problem. If someone points out to her she's making trouble for others, she'll apologize and correct it, as she's not malicious so much as thoughtless. But thoughtless she most certainly can be.
Poppin is a quick and eager learner, of things both permitted and less than allowed. She can pick locks and knows a bit of basic knifework, skills learned from various friends over the turns. She's hardly an accomplished criminal, knowing just enough to get herself into trouble.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Father: Popper, Holder, Fort Hold
Mother: Lollin, Holder, Fort Hold
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Nope
BIRTHPLACE: The wilds near Fort
HISTORY: Poppin's parents' hold fared poorly in the war. She was born in the woodlands, to a group of refugees, and her earliest memories are of hiding from weyr soldiers and hunting game to survive. By the time a truce was declared, Poppin was seven turns old and had never known life inside a proper hold. When Fort Hold decided to have mercy on them and offer them sanctuary (courtesy of a few remaining connections their lord's family possessed), Poppin was already set in her ways.
She tried not to cause trouble, for her parents' sake, but it was hard. She didn't understand why all these strange adults were in charge of her and telling her to do things NOT connected to their survival. Poppin paid attention only to the lessons she found amusing and her parents apprenticed her off to the starcrafters as soon as they were able. She knew less than everyone else did to start, but she had a quick mind and caught on readily enough to be permitted to stay.
As Poppin was nearing her journeyman knots, one of the younger apprentices had a valuable necklace confiscated by a Master, as punishment for a prank of some sort. The young girl's parents were furious over the loss of their family heirloom and Poppin agreed to get it back. She broke into the master's room while he was away and cracked open his trunk. Unfortunately, she was caught by a visiting searchrider and might well have been branded- but his dragon saw potential in her and argued with the rider until he offered her a choice. Come to Fort Weyr, stand as a candidate and try to contribute something worthwhile to Pern or be turned in and risk the consequences. Poppin chose candidacy, entering Fort Weyr with the firm warning that if she caused one whiff of trouble, he'd tell everyone she was a thief.
