FULL APPEARANCE: Dobby has character. There's really no other way to put it. There's something round and exaggerated, almost cartoonish, about his features and expressions. It doesn't help that he has a high-pitched voice and a tendency towards expressive motions. Dobby is very fond of clothes, the more colorful and garish the better, especially socks. He often wears many bright and clashing layers and his socks almost never match.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Dobby tries. He really, really does. He wants to be a good rider and work hard and be appreciated. He's earnest and well-meaning and loyal to his friends. He is also quite a meddler who does not know when enough is enough and thinks he always knows best. He is willing to get his friends in trouble or even hurt them a little if he thinks it's the best way of protecting them. He doesn't always think things through.
Dobby is his own worst critic. He blames himself for not doing enough whenever things go wrong, especially if it is conceivably his fault. He'll take failures to heart and admit, not hiding from blame or punishment. When frustrated, he leans heavily on Kersuth, who can usually talk him down and is much more level-headed than he is. His self-esteem is better than it used to be but he still feels like he should be able to fix more than he can.
Dobby doesn't mind hard work but he also wants to be appreciated. Not so much it's uncomfortable, but a little would be nice. He is proud of the life he's made as a dragonrider and is very attached to D'ark, M'love and most of all Kersuth. He can be a bit clingy and doesn't really respect the concept of privacy and personal space when it comes to his little family. He would fight an honor duel for any of their honor. He'd probably lose, as he isn't a great fighter, but he'd try.
Dobby sometimes refers to himself in the third person, especially when he's stressed or anxious, as a holdover from childhood speech patterns. He is very friendly and pretty easy-going, although some social niceties fly over his head.
HISTORY
FAMILY: Probably still out there somewhere roaming the roads, but Dobby hasn't kept track of them and they haven't kept track of him since he left.
Adopted Kind-of-Brother Figure: D'ark of Garnet Masreith
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: N/A
BIRTHPLACE: The wilds near Benden
HISTORY: Dobby was born to a pair of holdless wanderers, descended from a long line just like them. They had little but they cared for him. He wandered alongside his parents and family, scavenging where they could, sometimes hunting. Living off the land as best they could. It wasn't an easy life but it was his. He was happy enough. It was all he knew.
Dobby was nothing and nobody, just another holdless, hopeless child in Pern's forsaken outlands. And he would have stayed that way, just another boy wandering Pern's roads, foraging for what he could find and cowering from thread, if it wasn't for L'ron. The bronzerider had fled from High Reaches in the wake of Golre's fall and found Dobby rummaging through his trash. For some reason, L'ron decided to offer Dobby a new life- in exchange for his unconditional service. For the first time, Dobby dreamed of more.
Dobby agreed, too excited to even leave word for his family, and together the pair went on to Benden weyr, where L'ron found a new place. Dobby served him and the weyr loyally, as a drudge and L'ron's ears and eyes in the lower cavern. L'ron never treated him very well or even seemed to see him as a person at all, but he covinced Dobby that without him- Dobby would have been nothing. Lower than dirt. Dobby remembered. Dobby was grateful.
And then one day, L'ron came to Dobby with a new task. He had a son, a garnetrider named D'ark, who was bringing shame to the family name. Dobby was to go to High Reaches as a candidate, watch D'ark, keep him from marrying his thoroughly unsuitable weyrmate and report back to L'ron. Dobby wasn't really good enough to be Searched of course- both he and L'ron knew that- but L'ron would arrange everything. All Dobby had to do was go.
Dobby agreed. He would protect his savior's son from everything, including himself, and maybe finally properly earn his place in the weyr.
