FULL APPEARANCE: Tamir is not a striking beauty, but she makes the most of what she has. Her skin is always clean and faintly perfumed, her hair brushed, her clothes neatly tailored. She mostly wears dresses and skirts, well-made but not ostentatious, and eschews pants or the sort of dyes and embroidery that are inappropriate to both her means and her station. Her build is softer than that of many long time candidates, as a result of a life spent surrounded by parchment.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: At Fort Hold, Tamir was an efficient, conscientious worker, grateful for her position and ruthless in her focus and organization. It didn't stop her from losing everything she'd worked for. Her drive remains, but these days is focused mostly on her anger. High Reaches Weyr's ideas are dangerous and they won't stay contained. The common people are meant to be led and giving them power will do nothing but subject Pern to their impulsive, irrational whims. The weyrs are meant to be an example to Pern. When they insist on throwing out the established hierarchies, how can the outside world be expected to stay in balance? Tamir doesn't hide her political opinions. While she respects the hierarchy and her low place in it, she refuses to simply pretend everything is fine. Because nothing will ever change if someone doesn't speak for simple, good sense. She is generally a traditionalist in most things. The new has brought nothing but trouble, in her experience, and just because she doesn't see the purpose in certain customs doesn't mean none exists.
Tamir was and remains a deeply ambitious woman, her focus having broadened from advancing herself to fixing what she considers wrong with Pern. She deeply resents all her wasted turns at Fort Hold and takes some pleasure in seeing High Reaches struggle. They started it, after all, with their refusal to simply accept their lot. She believes herself to be fundamentally logical, but her self-interest plays a large role in shaping her political beliefs and no matter how much she wishes otherwise, she cannot fully separate her emotions from her reason. At the end of the day, however, Tamir is a survivor. She'll do what it takes to keep making do.
She has never had many friends or deep connections and isn't looking to change that. Loyalty outside a professional context is a distraction. While she has heard most riders develop a deep attachment to their dragon, she has no intention of allowing her bond to override her rationality.
HISTORY
FAMILY: Father: Tamal, drudge
Mother: Nadir, drudge
Several siblings
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Marriage is for other people
BIRTHPLACE: Fort Hold
HISTORY: Tamir was born at Fort Hold, to a pair of nobodies, with few expectations that she would amount to much. From an early age, however, she knew she wanted more. While other children played, she convinced one of Fort's many Harpers to teach her how to read and write. She watched the workings of Fort Hold's drudges and workers carefully, learning as much as she could about how they worked. When she was of age, she was going to make herself indispensable, useful enough to earn real power.
At the age of 15, Tamir began to work for the Assistant Steward of Fort Hold. She was given small tasks at first, but her responsibilities gradually expanded as she proved herself both diligent and adept. She helped track a handful of key supply lines and record the information more important people needed to make the best decisions for the Hold. Tamir was confident that in time, she could advance to more prestigious positions.
When Evander rose to power, everything changed. Tamir wasn't one of his trusted associates. She was removed from her position and left once again with nothing. She swallowed her pride and became what her parents had been- a common drudge. She would work her way back up again- somehow.
Her chance came when Evander fell. Tamir offered her services and knowledge to the new lord, Vellaren. She thrived under the new regime and the bright future she'd always envisioned seemed possible.
But once again, everything fell apart. The fires came and the future of the hold itself was uncertain. Tamir did her best to assist Lord Vellaren and her new consort find food for their people and places for the refugees to live. When Telgar saved them, she thought they had a chance.
They hadn't done enough, fast enough. The people were angry and the reformation of a distant weyr had convinced them that they too were suited to rule themselves. The common people took over the hold. Tamir, as a part of the old administration and vocal opponent of the revolution, was sent into exile.
There was only one place she could go- High Reaches Weyr, where it all started. If they could be made to see the error of their ways, maybe the world would follow them and fall back into place. She planned on making her way as one of the weyrfolk, but to her surprise, the dragon come to transport her deemed her a suitable candidate. She accepted, because the riders were more likely to listen to one of their own. How hard could candidacy be? Children did it, after all.
