PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
In another life, Raine might have become a Scribe or a Harper. She enjoys learning about many things, particularly history, and is always happy to lecture at great length about the things she knows, regardless of the interest of her audience. In this world, however, Raine is a dragonrider and she takes her duty seriously. She sets high expectations for herself and others and is quick to snap at riders who fail to live up to those expectations. She doesn't believe in coddling people and she doesn't care if she hurts any feelings. Pern is counting on them to keep it safe and Threadfall is no place for slacking off or stupidity. Her high expectations extend to her family, including her brother. She loves Genis and wishes the best for him, which is exactly why she'll push him to be the best he can.
Raine is a deeply pragmatic woman who believes sacrifices for the greater good are sometimes worth making and who tries to see the world as it is, not as she'd like it to be. While she does have her limits, she won't let a rigid set of moral ideals blind her to reality. She'll make the hard choices if called to and advocate for the best possible result, even if a few principles need to be compromised to get there. Raine remembers how High Reaches used to be and while she doesn't hate bronze or goldriders, she doesn't entirely trust the weyr to stay on its new path. She fears that High Reaches will someday return to the hierarchy of old and dislikes traditionalists.
Raine isn't inclined towards domestic duties. She is a particularly terrible cook, due partially to her inability to follow a recipe and her tendency to add fruit to everything. Raine also has a strong dislike of the water, due to nearly drowning as a child. She will always try to bathe her dragon in the shallowest part of the lake she can manage and doesn't linger after her own baths.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Kloitz: Father, greenrider (Died in battle)
Virginia: Mother, greenrider (Died in childbirth)
Kvar: Uncle
Genis: Younger brother, candidate
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: N/A
BIRTHPLACE: High Reaches Weyr
HISTORY:
Raine was born at High Reaches to a pair of greenriders in the time of Golre. As a child, she knew nothing but Golre's High Reaches, where people like her parents were mistreated and discriminated against.
When she was six, Raine wandered too far into the lake and nearly drowned. Her father pulled her back out but she was left with a fear of water she never entirely outgrew.
Raine was ten turns old when her father died in battle. She never learned the details. She didn't need to. Raine knew that at High Reaches, greenriders were seen as disposable and she never doubted that his life had been thrown away carelessly, when more might have been done to keep him safe.
Only a few months later, Raine's mother died in childbirth. Raine's uncle, Kvar, and her newborn baby brother, Genis, were the only family Raine had left. Raine loved them both. She looked out for her much younger brother as best she could and reminisced with her uncle often about her lost parents. Raine continued to grow and study, some part of her always aware that everything she did meant less than the color of the dragon she would someday Impress.
Raine entered candidacy the day she turned fifteen. Before Raine Impressed, Golre went to war again against Fort. And this time, she was defeated. The weyr started to change for the better. Raine remained a candidate. Her parents had been riders and so would she.
In 2763, Raine decided to temporarily transfer to Fort. She was curious about the oldest weyr on Pern, whose riders had reformed her home. She would miss her family, but Macath's coming clutch presented a perfect opportunity to see it for herself.
At the hatching, Raine, like her parents before her, Impressed a green. She was proud to carry on their legacy even as she feared what being a greenrider could mean, if the traditionalists every again came to power. Most of all, Raine loved Spriggth from the moment the little green knocked her to the sands in her eagerness to meet her. Spriggth needed to learn to focus on the right things but she had a sharp mind and a good heart. She was quirky and endlessly curious and surprisingly clever. Raine was glad to be her rider.
When Raine graduated, she went right back to High Reaches. It was her family's home and she'd been apart from them long enough. And there she stayed, through all the turbulence and struggles and changes in leadership. She fought thread diligently and did her best to help her wing and she watched her brother grow up, teaching and guiding him as best she could.
Even when stolen eggs appeared on High Reaches' sands, Raine stayed. Leaving High Reaches would change nothing. It was her home and her family's. Besides, her brother was beginning candidacy and taking a principled stand wasn't worth missing seeing him someday Impress.
