Her skin is tan even in the winter, from a mixture of genetics and many days spent outside. She's managed to get by without serious injury, but has a collection of minor scars from old war wounds and more recent threadscores. She wears standard, plain leathers while working and keeps her hair cut short to allow her helmet to fit more comfortably. On her own time, however, she favors fairly feminine dresses, paired with pretty jewelry.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: There are two sides to Kiriani- the hardened warrior and the loving aunt. She sees no contradiction between them. If she cares for the next generation, she owes it to them to do all she can to build them a better future. While at work, she is steely and focused and a talented rider in her own right. She has little tolerance for mistakes and rarely minces her words. If someone isn't willing to do what it takes to be a rider, and to make the sacrifice required to be a good one, they should never have entered candidacy. Failure in the skies cost lives and that is never acceptable. She is prone to snapping and is often harsh in the face of even honest mistakes. She is firmly a liberal, believing the best possible world is one where everyone is free to reach their full potential.
With the young, however, Kiriani is patient and caring. She loves her nephews very much and is very fond of children in general. She sometimes struggles to balance the demands of riding and caring for her nephews, but tries never to let them see it. She does her best to shelter her nephews from the harsher realties of the world. They've already been through enough and she does her best to be a beacon of stability and warmth for them.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Sister: Anithra
Nephews and adopted children: Threta, Anani
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: N/A
BIRTHPLACE: A cothold beholden to Fort
HISTORY: Kiriani grew up during the interval war, in a cothold mostly removed from the worst of the danger. Her days were filled with chores and harper lessons, not battles, but she always knew an attack could come.
When Kiriani was fifteen and a Searchdragon saw in her the potential to be a rider, she agreed to become a candidate, knowing full well she was signing up to be a soldier. Her sister and her parents and the rest of Pern deserved to be safe and if she had the ability to Impress a dragon and fight to protect them, how could she refuse?
At seventeen, Kiriani Impressed to green Tabesleuth. She threw herself into her training and once she graduated, devoted herself fully to the war. She fought for Fort Weyr loyally and without hesitation, even when it meant killing other riders. If Fort was to survive, they had to fight to win and there was no room for moral qualms in war. Kiriani never enjoyed it, but neither did she feel too much guilt for doing what she had to do.
Kiriani was still glad to see peace come. Thread was a threat that affected them all and the weyrs would never be able to fight it if they were too busy battling each other. She turned her focus to fighting thread with the same intensity she had given the rest of her career as a dragonrider.
Kiriani had always imagined she'd have children, but it hadn't been a priority during the war turns. She never found a steady weyrmate, however, and her flings over the turns never resulted in offspring.
Kiriani ended up with a family of her own from an unexpected source. One day, she received a letter from her nephew, Threta, saying that his parents had terrorized his younger brother, Anani, to the point he wouldn't leave his family's quarters. Kiriani flew down the next day and her sister all too willingly turned over custody of their children.
It was a hard adjustment and for the first time, Kiriani found herself torn between her duty as a rider and being the aunt her nephews deserved, but they found their balance and the children thrived. Threta came of age for candidacy and Anani began his training as a woodsmith.
Recently, her wing was badly hit by threadfall, a disaster that cost them the lives of two riders. Daylight Wing's entire wingleadership stepped down to be replaced by a pair of bronzeriders, of whom Kiriani is deeply skeptical. Daylight Wing is meant to be for green and blueriders- not bronzeriders whose only claim to leadership is the color of their dragons' hides.
