Drusilla can carry herself like a trained guard and soldier when she cares to- but she doesn't often care to. Most of the time, her body posture is casual, but assertive, sometimes bordering on confrontational. She isn't a woman who wears many frills, generally sticking to her wherhandler leathers and a practical pair of boots. Drusilla's is prone to dropping the "g" at the end of words and peppering her speech with her share of crude language.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Drusilla is a hard, pragmatic woman, who does what it takes to survive and thrive. She's not the squeamish sort and isn't particularly concerned with the concept of "virtue." She has her lines she won't cross- as everyone should- but she's never claimed to be morally pure and doesn't care much for abstract concepts of honor. She'd rather be effective than good. She can be cynical and quick to think worse of people than they actually are. She doesn't care to try win over people who don't think much of her- and doesn't have much patience for the self-righteous or the ideologues. That said, she'll take her allies when she can find them and knows how to separate the business from the personal.
Which isn't to say Drusilla believes in nothing. She believes everyone should be free, to choose their own path and make their own destiny. Back when she was a captain, she often recruited people who seemed to need the opportunity for a fresh start. She's not blindly loyal, but once won, her loyalties are firm. If her former squadmates call on her, she'll answer without question. If they need a guard bribed or a rival threatened or a body buried? She'll do it without asking too many questions. Her people come first.
Drusilla takes seriously her current position in High Reaches' Squad. She's still a guard at heart, even with no more hold to protect, and won't shirk off when it comes to keep Pern and the weyr safe.
HISTORY
FAMILY: Not many left surviving- her grandfather, Rellus, and her parents have since passed on from old age and she never had any children of her own. Some of her siblings and cousins are probably still out there somewhere, but her primary loyalty is to the now-former squadmates she sees as adopted family.
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: N/A
BIRTHPLACE: High Reaches Hold
HISTORY:
Drusilla was born in High Reaches Hold, to a family with a long history of serving as wherhandlers in the ranks of the hold's guards. They were a large, fairly prominent family in Drusilla's childhood and Drusilla knew she intended to follow in their footsteps. The patriarch of their family was Drusilla's grandfather, Rellus, who had levied his skills as a guard and a wherhandler into a position of some influence with the Lord Holder. After Rellus retired, however, and a new lord who had never known him rose to power, the family's power started to fade. The new generations still largely chose to walk the path of wherhandler, but no longer found captaincies and other positions of responsibility as easily won as they had been in their glory days. Some, including many of Drusilla's siblings, left for other smaller holds, where they could forge new legacies.
Drusilla stayed at High Reaches Hold. She did not Impress at 17 or even 27, always intending to someday rebond her grandfather's Rellus' might bronze wher, when he passed. She served as a guard without a wher, protecting High Reaches Hold as best she could with her knives and her fists. Fortunately, Rellus lived a long, healthy life and Drusilla was 35 turns old by the time Rellusk required a new handler. To the surprise of Drusilla and her family, Rellusk chose to rebond one of Drusilla's younger brothers, who had already had another wher of his own for many turns, instead, leaving Drusilla at an unexpected crossroads.
At the end of the day, Drusilla's family had always been wherhandlers. She had always intended to become one herself. Two turns later, when Rellusk sired a clutch with one of the hold's queens, Drusilla requested a promising looking egg. The egg hatched a red wher- one of the new-fangled garnets who'd started hatching across Pern a turn before.
Not all wherhandlers accepted the new garnets, even within Drusilla's own family, although more and more were hatching every turn, until they were no longer an anomaly. One particularly hidebound uncle recommend Drusilla consider retiring from the guard. High Reaches was a respectable hold, after all, and they were a respectable wherhandling family. Drusilla quickly decided she had no patience for anyone's norms or squeamishness. She was a wherhandler and a guard. She had more important jobs to do.
Through grit and determination, and a willingness to take jobs other wherhandlers saw as dirty business, Drusilla rose through the ranks and became a captain of her own small squad of handlers. They were never the most prestigious squad but Drusilla took pride in her place and was loyal to her squadmates. Drusilla made a habit of recruiting free spirits who didn't fit in to their civilian lives- not all of whom made the easiest or most diplomatic colleagues.
Drusilla's life was knocked off course when a mudslide destroyed High Reaches Hold. Her and her squad did what they could to help in the search and rescue efforts., before taking refuge at High Reaches Weyr, with the rest of their former neighbors and people. Drusilla, who had never been the sort to laze about for long, signed up to help Sunburst Squad. She hasn't given up on seeing her hold restored- but she's not a builder or a crafter and right now, the best thing she can do is help pull her weight and ensure the holders don't wear out their welcome.
