Though he stands a little below average in height, Odysseus more than compensates in strength and stamina. Muscular from Turns of hard work and activity, he often draws eyes wherever he goes, his demeanor proud and quiet, but commanding. A number would see him as quite handsome, between his strong features, his curly brown hair, and warm gray-blue eyes. For his wardrobe, he prefers quality and function above all, often wearing a tough leather jerkin, simple breeches, and sturdy boots. In addition, he always keeps a belt knife on his person, in case of emergency.

Odysseus is often defined by his loyalty, courage, and determination to go on no matter what challenges he must face. Call him headstrong or willful, but he'd gladly face a thousand swords to protect those he loves. Brave to a fault, he won't hesitate to undertake that which others would not. Odysseus time and again proves himself an intelligent and resourceful sort, his ability to think fast under pressure and talent for tactics a great boon in a variety of situations. A witty and charismatic speaker, he has such a gift for speech and a talent for getting others' focus that one might think he should've been born a Harper rather than a soldier.
In contrast to what he might say, Odysseus is actually too proud for his own good, which can go on to affect others too. An arrogant sort who believes he can do no wrong, he would blame others for his own errors, especially should said errors cause harm to others. Though loyal, his devotion is selective and exclusive, leading him to sometimes shun those with whom he would not care to associate. In addition, he can be overly protective of those he loves, so much so that he might hardly let them from his sight. It's quite easy to piss him off, given his poor countenance and short fuse, and Odysseus is a totally different man while so worked up. Aggressive and outright vicious, he acts before thinking, something he always comes to regret at a later date.

Odysseus was born to Hold guard Laertes and his wife Anticlea, in a cozy home in Tillek Hold proper. Life was simple and his future straightforward, certain he was to train hard and be a guard as his father and grandfather before him, but that didn't mean he had no room for friends, as Polites would prove. All of Odysseus' earliest memories had Polites within them, from quiet moments at home or exploring as far as either's parents would permit. Growing from boys to men together saw them grow nigh inseparable, no matter how each took up more responsibility within Hold and home as both matured.
As soon as he was strong enough to hold a sword and spear, Odysseus took his place alongside his father as a Tillek guard, while Polites was taught fishing by his own family. No matter how different each man's duty was in service to Tillek, Odysseus always made time to see Polites, staying close to him through good and bad. As a result, he was aware of an aquatic creature giving Polites and his family trouble, impacting how much fish they were catching. Full of headstrong youth and reckless abandon, Odysseus declared they should put a blade to use and rid Tillek of its fish-eating skulker.
Needless to say, it was a hazardous and foolhardy endeavor, one that almost took both Odysseus and Polites' lives. Stepping in to protect Polites from a terrible blow, he almost failed to strike it in retaliation, but by sheer fortune, Tillek's fishers' scourge was defeated: a shark. Upon revealing all that had happened, Odysseus was soundly scolded by his father, a man who'd been looking forward to retiring and placing his legacy in his son's hands, beginning to question whether said son was ready for such responsibility. But Odysseus didn't need his father's scorn to change his tune. Realizing how his dearest friend had been put at risk by his own foolishness, seeing that horrible disappointment in his mother's eyes, he vowed he'd change.
And change Odysseus did. As Turns went by, he focused all his efforts into bettering himself, from his sword arm to tactics and wit, mellowing into a somber and solemn man who thought before he acted. But change was nigh upon Odysseus and Polites both. Odysseus was well aware for Turns that Polites wouldn't live in Tillek for good. Being a proficient sailor, he was certain he could provide his services to a flourishing Semaca Weyr, transporting goods and supplies alongside...less reputable seafarers. All he needed was enough marks to purchase his own vessel, an endeavor that took Turns, but that day dawned one fine summer day.
Semaca awaited them. Odysseus swore he wouldn't let Polites go by himself, a promise since childhood he would be damned to break, so he gathered his things, said his goodbyes, and set sail for Semaca. Little did he know that attending Dragon Day, Semaca's annual festival, in 2776 would see both Polites and himself be Searched as Candidates. Shocked his life would change so radically, but determined to serve Pern, Odysseus accepted.
