FULL APPEARANCE: Sylvia is a young woman of slightly above average height, with some definition in her arms from her work gathering and grinding grapes. She's not the most athletic candidate on Pern and can be a little clumsy at times- but she's pretty strong and can generally hold her own in physical activities. She generally dresses practically and casually, in work clothes she's not afraid to get dirty, with her red hair tied up and out of the way. While she's still on the paler side, Sylvia tans better than most redheads and at Semaca, her skin is perpetually a bit golden. Sylvia is an extremely expressive young woman, wearing her emotions written widely across her face, voice and gestures. Even when she's bluffing (and she definitely can bluff)- she bluffs with conviction.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Sylvia is an extremely friendly young woman, eager to take part in all life has to offer. She'll talk to virtually anyone and is easily drawn into their schemes and adventures. She tries to learn a little bit from everyone she meets and her conversations are peppered with borrowed phrases and gestures and habits she just thought were neat. If she sees someone doing something cool, she'll ask to learn it- even if it's just something like talking very loudly about her wares in the marketplace. She does have a competitive streak and can be pretty immature with people she sees as rivals- at least until the contest ends. Once someone’s won and someone’s lost, she’s perfectly happy to let bygones be bygones and doesn’t hold a grudge over the outcome.
Sylvia is quick to make friends and a ready flirt, although often it's more just friendly flirting than anything especially meaningful (especially when she’s already with someone- as she’ll be loyal to her partner, but will still bust out a few cheesy one liners). She generously peppers her friends with gifts, which are usually thoughtful but a bit...odd. Why is this pebble or lizard's tail a gift? She just thought you would like it.
Sylvia is often a bit scattered and struggles to manage her day. Her friends, everything cool they're doing, gathering ingredients, making wine, selling wine...It can be a lot to keep balanced and she's not the most organized or together of people. She gets stressed and frazzled pretty easily, whether it's because she has too much on her plate or her latest wine experiment failed or a negotiation with a customer's going badly. It does not help that Sylvia only has so much stamina for the day- she needs her 8-10 candlemarks of sleep or she'll be useless the nice morning.
As a vinter, Sylvia is adventurous and creative. She trusts her gut and comes up with her share of odd recipes- some of which are better than others. She'll try any idea once. Because you never know until you try.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Farmer parents
Handful of siblings
Uncle Oswald, Journeyman Vinter
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: No one in particular right now- but that doesn't mean she can't engage in some light flirting
BIRTHPLACE: A small hold outside of Benden
HISTORY: Sylvia was born in a small hold, in the heart of Benden wine country. Her parents and their neighbors were ordinary farmers, growing grain to eat and grapes to sell. But Sylvia? Sylvia always had bigger dreams. She wanted to be a vinter, like the ones she saw in gathers at the big hold, winning fame and fortune by brewing some of the best wines on Pern.
When Sylvia came of age, she moved to Benden Hold and apprenticed with the best vinter she could find- who wasn't a particularly famous vinter, but was willing to make her an apprentice for a fee her family could afford. Sylvia quickly fell in love with everything about the craft, from picking the grapes to making to the wine to negotiating with an ever-changing range of customers.
At 21, Sylvia walked the tables and became a journeyman, although it still felt like there was so much to learn. Upon her graduation, she learned she wasn't the only vinter in her family after all, receiving a letter of congratulations from her Uncle Oswald- and an invitation.
His letter told her about Semaca, a new land full of promise and mystery, where a vinter could truly make a name for herself. Did she really want to be just another brewer of Benden wine, her uncle asked? Or did she want the chance to be a part of vinting history?
Sylvia jumped at the call and caught the next ship to Semaca. Which...wasn't exactly what she'd expected. Her uncle hadn't mentioned it was quite so...rustic. Or anything about the giant murderous felines.
But that was okay! She'd make it work...Somehow. Her uncle did give her a firelizard egg as a welcome gift, so that was cool, she guessed. And surely she'd eventually get used to the giant spiders!
Not long after Sylvia arrived- she was recruited at a Dragon Day to be a candidate. Sylvia had never especially thought about being a rider before, but decided why not go for it and have an adventure? Think of all the hard-to-get-berries she could pick with a dragon by her side to help her gather!
