[EVENT] Recompense

After the whers retreated, Fort's riders managed to dig ditches to contain the wildfire until the rain came to put it out, but not before a few fields were burned. Several holders have arrived at the weyr, demanding recompense for their ruined crops- and assurances the weyr will take steps to protect them and their families from the whers' next move.

"We cannot very well bend over and unearth a ripe new crop on your demand, sirs and madams." Holt's expressionless scrutiny passed along the face of everybody who's come to their domain with complaints to the brim. "We understand the aggravation of it. You all may have lost some precious food, but we also lost one of our own and several are laid up with injuries not expected to heal for several weeks, at the very least."

He stood beside Raidoth. Despite the unimpressive stance of the white, his markings and reddened glare from opalescent orbs was enough to drain some of the anger from the voices which barked at them. Fort Weyr will be doing all it can to assist those with that which has been lost. There must be some understanding that we have limited knowledge on what we're working with - or against, as it were.

"Our riders are scouring the wilds as we speak. Rest assured that those witless reptiles - " a term intended to be used as an insult, as whers and dragons were not reptiles and certainly not cold-blooded " - will come to judgment once their lair has been discovered." Turning his gaze to his superiors, Holt cocked his head and added in his still, undeterred voice, "Perhaps we should consider sending a watchdragon or two to their domiciles until the threat has been exsanguinated? Where they can be afforded, of course. Winter will lessen the threat of Threadfall, thus making our resources a little more afforable."

G'las had a headache. As a wingsecond, dealing with holder folks was within the wheelhouse of her expected responsibilities, but that didn't mean he had to like it, particularly not when they came around demanding things of the Weyr. It was a job made even harder when people decided to step in without showing an ounce of sympathy for the plight of the holders involved.

"Please forgive him," G'las said, giving the holders a bow of both greeting and apology. "We are mourning the loss of some of our own. It was rather sudden, which makes it harder to come to terms with. We will of course do what we can to ensure you can survive the coming winter. Please decide among yourselves who you'd like as a representative to coordinate the logistics, and between our stores and those of Fort, we will be sure you don't starve." Everyone might have to tighten their belts a bit this winter, but as it was Fort Weyr's fault, it was their duty to rectify it. Ah well, at least it'd be good for G'las's diet.

G'las propped a hand on her hip and giving Holt another look. Well. Turns out he could be sensible when people weren't making demands of him. "You can exsanguinate the wild whers if you want. Seems a bit messy for my tastes - I mean, have you ever tried to get blood out of clothes? Nightmare, absolute nightmare - but if you find them first, more power to you. However, that watchdragon idea is quite a good one. I'll bring it up at the next wingleader meeting and see who all we can spare for it."
