Korra is lean and athletic, with a solid layer of muscle from her turns as a candidate and rider. Her skin is tan, a striking contrast to her blue eyes. She has her share of scars from old threadfalls, although most of them are fairly superficial. Korra keeps her dark hair short. It isn't usually cut particularly cleanly, as she does it herself with a knife. Korra walks with a slight limp, favoring her left leg. When she uses her right arm, the movements are stiff and her fine motor skills are limited. Korra will often try to pick things up with her right hand on impulse, only to fumble and drop them.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Korra believes she should be the perfect rider, self-reliant, strong and wise, able to save the world. She can be arrogant and self-important, expecting the non-riders of the world to respect her station and believing she has a right and duty to stick her nose in any problem she sees. Korra has a temper she struggles to control and lashes out when afraid or frustrated. She can be prickly even with the people she cares most about.
Korra often fears she doesn't live up to who she should be. Korra expects herself to succeed immediately and is easily demoralized when she struggles. She doesn't like showing weakness and isn't good at asking for or accepting help or advice. She'll make bad, impulsive choices just to prove she isn't scared and will refuse to admit her fears or frailties even to herself. For instance, Korra still hasn't fully processed the injuries and close calls she's had in threadfall in her turns as a rider. She is scared of getting hurt again, but can't acknowledge it, and responds by making reckless choices and then panicking when things go wrong. Korra ties much of her self-worth and ego to her role as a rider and doesn't really have a good sense of who she is outside of it.
Deep down, Korra has a good heart. She may not always be good at being kind or polite, but she does care about others and Pern in general. She works hard to try to be the rider Pern deserves for her to be. While she makes her share of mistakes, she will eventually apologize and admit she was wrong, after the heat of the moment has passed.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Father: Tonraq, rider
Mother: Senna, rider
Assorted aunts, uncles and cousins
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Asami
BIRTHPLACE: Telgar Weyr
HISTORY:
Korra was born at Telgar weyr, the only child to two rider parents. She grew up knowing she wanted to be a rider just like them and signed up for candidacy as soon as she came of age. She Impressed at the first clutch she stood at, at only a little over 15, to a blue named Raavath. Raavath and Korra initially clashed, bickering throughout their weyrlinghood. In time, however, they learned to love and value each other and grew into a strong partnership.
After Korra graduated, she transferred to Fort, wanting to see more of the world outside Telgar. She had some rough threadfalls, taking her share of injuries, both minor and more serious. Korra pushed stubbornly through, refusing to allow any of them to hold her back for long.
Korra took the opportunity to travel to Ruatha as often as she could to watch the runners race. She'd grown up hearing stories about the sport from her father, a long time fan of the races, and Ruathan runners were supposed to be some of the best on Pern. They were even more exciting to watch in person. Korra developed a bit of a crush on one particularly talented (and attractive) Ruathan jockey.
At the races, Korra met a holder named Asami, a fellow fan of the races (and the attractive jockey). She'd never spent much time with anyone who lived outside of the weyr, but the pair became fast friends. Asami was beautiful and kind and smart and Korra felt like she could talk to her about almost anything. Korra had never had a friend like her before. Korra saw her at as often as she could and wrote her letters when she couldn't.
When Korra introduced her friend to her dragon, Raavath saw in Asami the potential to become a rider too. Korra was delighted for Asami to come to the weyr and hoped she would soon Impress. Asami was left standing several times, but Korra didn't give up hope that someday they'd fight side by side.
When she was 19, Korra got herself a canine for her birthday. Her puppy was big and white and fluffy. Korra adored the newly-named Naga immediately.
When Z'osh usurped Fort Weyr, Korra was one of the riders protesting, loudly. When that failed to accomplish anything, she transferred back to Telgar, leaving Asami behind. Still distracted by worries about Fort (and Asami), Korra didn't pay as much attention as she should to learning the formations of her new wing. When the first threadfall came, she was out of position and Raavath crashed into another dragon. Korra's right arm and leg broke in the collision.
Korra's recovery was long and difficult, made worse by Korra's own impatience to get back out there. She pushed herself harder than the healers recommended, not giving her body enough time to heal. She continued to write to Asami, trying to minimize how badly she was hurt and how much she was struggling to adapt. When Korra had mostly healed, she joined the Healer's Wing, which she hated. She didn't feel like a real rider and didn't like being out of the fight and danger.
Korra didn't go back to Fort, even after Z'osh had left. She wasn't the rider she'd been and she didn't want the people she'd fought with to see her at anything less than her best. Her dragon knew her well though and sensed her heart was still at Fort. Raavath continued to encourage Korra to return there.
Finally, in 2773, Korra agreed. She felt ready to rejoin a proper fighting wing and try to reclaim as much as she could of her life.
