She won't hesitate to do the work required of a candidate or a rider. She always wears a wherhide jacket, purchased in happier times, with a homespun tunic and pants and patched up wherhide boots. No matter how hard pressed, she refuses to switch to weyrmade clothes. She likes her things and they're all she has left of home.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY: Quinn is first and foremost dutiful. She is resigned to the fact that her life will be a dangerous and possibly short one. She accepts that her dragon will never be normal and will never love her the way she would wish to be loved. That isn't to say never she never resents any of it. Somewhere deep down, she wishes she could have had a different life. But she is who she is and this is her destiny now. Quinn is over-protective of her brother, Tarquin, and wishes he would choose any other path. She misses her family and is dedicated to protecting the ordinary people in Fort Weyr's protectorate.
Quinn tries to hold to a strict set of principles. Riders and dragons are dangerous and powerful and she believes Pern would be a better place if they had limits. She often debates her morality with Louicyth and she has very little tolerance for riders doing bad things. She is naturally inclined to rigidity to the point of stubbornness and is prone to missing the bigger picture, caught up in morality over practicality unless Louicyth can talk her out of it. She can be decidedly cynical about the weyr, riders and dragonkind and will never feel entirely comfortable in her rider's knots.
Quinn will always struggle with reading and writing and her knowledge base will never match the weyrborn, the craft-educated or holdbred riders who are simply more dedicated students. The martial aspects of weyr life come more easily. When her family or friends are threatened, Quinn is quite capable of winning a fight, although she'll feel conflicted about it later and she doesn't always know when to stop.
Which isn’t to say that duty comes without resentment. Quinn remembers the tales of the war turns, even if nobody else does, and that all riders are tyrants at heart. They’re not the heroes. She doesn’t want to be one of them. But...she’s not sure how long she’ll be able to hold onto herself surrounded by them and their wickedness.
Because Quinn knows herself and she understands there’s a darkness inside her- a place built of bitterness and resentment that can take away all that is good and moral and right. She doesn’t want to give in to it. She wants to stay soft and innocent and pure. But a rider can’t be those things. Even if the enemy has changed...a rider is a warrior. And Quinn isn’t sure that’s a good idea.

BIRTHPLACE:
HISTORY: Quinn was born the eldest of five to a newly founded cothold beholden to the Fort. The people were the descendents of a minor hold that had been lost to dragon fire. They hated the weyrs and feared them, with no difference being seen between Fort or Ista or Benden. They were all the same- power-hungry riders content to lord it over the rest of them, growing fat off tithes and struggling for more and more power with no concern over who they hurt.
Quinn was Searched for the first time at fifteen, at a Gather at Fort hold. She refused- naturally. The riders might be needed now to fight thread. That didn’t make them good. Their cothold remained small but grew prosperous and life was good.
And then the fires came- again. They said it was natural- Quinn’s hold didn’t believe it. They suspected it was the riders come again. However it had started, they lost everything. All their crops. All their stores. Everything but the cothold itself. There was only one choice- they had to go back to Fort, however much they hated to give up their hard won independence. The children would have to find work, to help replenish their funds in the hopes of making a new start, unbeholden to anyone. Quinn was too old for apprenticeship and dragonriding paid better than drudgery, so it was decided that- much as they hated the idea- she would attempt to be Searched- again. She’d already done so once, after all. How hard could it be?
And so Quinn found a Searchrider and begged for the place she’d once refused. She was still suitable. She let herself be taken away to the weyr- for her family.
