FULL APPEARANCE:
Artemis is easily taken at first glance for a much younger girl. There is a softness and gentleness to her features, her golden skin is as of yet untouched by age and her black curls are thick and glossy. But there's a hardness to her eyes, a stubborn tilt to her chin, that suggests she is not to be underestimated. She moves like a hunter, all liquid grace and easy confidence. She dresses frequently in pants and tunics that don't hinder her motion, but at formal events, she takes pride in looking as well dressed and glamorous as any other Lord Holder's daughter, legitimate or no.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Artemis is proud and justly so. She knows she is athletic and intelligent, a glorious huntress in the prime of her strength. But beneath that arrogance lies a prickly dignity. Slights are met with the harshest punishments she can conceive of, no matter how minor the offense. When she considers herself demeaned, Artemis is often cruel and heartless, using her abilities to bring pain and terror upon the world.
Artemis does have her gentle side, however. She is extremely fond of the small and vulnerable, both human and animal, and will endeavor to protect them from all that means them harm. While she is not fond of men, she enjoys surrounding herself with a range of female and non-binary friends, whom she will provide for with the best of her abilities. She has little tolerance for betrayal, however, and her friendship is easily lost.
While no one could accuse Artemis of thinking too little about herself, she is not one of those poor souls unable to see beyond their own purview. She believes in the emancipation of womankind from the dominion of men, the protection of nature from those who would abuse it and the preservation of the world from common threats. She is brave and willing to suppress her own sense of honor and use fraud or trickery if the cause is noble enough. But if any dare imply she is any less for having done so...
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Father: Lord Zeuthan
Mother: Leto
Half-siblings on her both sides
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: None
BIRTHPLACE: Lemos Hold
HISTORY:
Artemis' mother was naive enough to trust the wrong man, a lord of a minor hold who plied her with promises and gifts until she lay down besides him. When Leto conceived, it became clear how little his protection was worth. She was no one, just another farmer's daughter, and when the lord's wife demanded she be sent from the hold as punishment for her adultery, there was no one to speak for her. And so, heavily pregnant and alone, she was sent forth to Lemos Hold, to provide for herself and her infant as best she could, with no husband to share the burden.
Leto gave birth to a girl named Artemis, and joined a small group of settlers heading out to found a new cothold. In those days, when dragon fought dragon and the holders suffered, going off into the wilds was a dangerous proposition. But there was nothing for Leto in Lemos and she refused to stay down and wait to disappear. So she joined them, taking her child with her.
It was a hard life that awaited them in the wilderness near Lemos, but Leto and Artemis took to it well. Leto found herself a proper husband who she loved and who loved her. And Artemis grew up wild and untamed, hunting with a group of other settler children. She took easily to the rough woodland trails, bringing in more game than many boys twice her age.
Artemis enjoyed the companionship of many of the fledgling hold's children, but her favorite of them all was a boy named Ori. He was a few turns older, strong and brave, and one of the few who posed an honest challenge to her skills. She was better with traps and snares and an abler tracker, but he was stronger and faster and better at throwing a spear. They spent many happy days wandering and hunting together and Artemis considered him her boon companion. Until she learned he was in love with her and wished to marry her when they both came of age.
Artemis had no interest in romantic entanglements and refused his suit. But he assumed time would change her mind and set his parents to arranging the match. When he and his family pushed, and her mother agreed to the idea, Artemis decided to simply walk away and make a new life elsewhere.
Artemis pondered what she wished to do. She knew she was an excellent hunter, but after her experience with Ori, she had no wish to work alone in the woods besides strange men. And she had little desire to start over in another small hold where she would be the outsider. She considered what other skills she had and decided she would be a healer. She had assisted her mother in childbirth a few times and had helped prepare folk remedies. She liked the work well enough. So she wrote to her father, for all she had never met the man, and requested his aid, in exchange for her continued silence on her true parentage. Lord Zeuthan made the arrangements.
But Artemis didn't remain long amongst the healers. A passing searchrider saw potential in her and brought her to Telgar weyr, where she Impressed blue Phoebuth. A few turns later, she decided to transfer for Semaca. There was nothing overly wrong with Telgar, but a new continent seemed exciting. Surely it would offer chances aplenty to help shape a new world better worth living in.
