[RUMOR] Summer Snow

As cold as High Reaches is, at least it's not Telgar. I heard sometimes in those mountains, they get snow even in the height of summer.

Amaata shuddered a little at the suggestion. Snow in summer - High Reaches was cold enough, thank you very much. "No, thank you - I prefer my summers green."

She'd only spent one winter in High Reaches so far, and it had been - well, memorable. She was from Igen originally, and while not Ista, it was still notably warmer than her current Weyr. "It begs the question, though - how far north could a Weyr be successfully established? Telgar is in the Northern Barrier Range, but would it be possible to live above those mountains?"

It didn't sound pleasant - but it did make Amaata thoughtful.

"Let the holders figure out the answer to that debacle," Adair answered with a dismissive wave of her hand. "I could absolutely do without the cold. Makes my skin ashy and dry. Do you have any idea how much oil would be needed to keep my complexion as succulent as it is now?"

The widening of her bright blue eyes and utter horror of her expression displayed exactly how she felt about that scenario. Absolute travesty! The terror!

"All these turns and not a soul has returned from beyond the range. I suppose it's so bitterly cold that any poor sap who goes over must freeze to death!"

The other woman's primary concern about the possibility of far north expansion was ... skin care? Amaata eyed her flatly, wondering at her shallowness.

"It is possible that any explorers freeze," Amaata allowed, "but if someone decided to live north of the mountains, it wouldn't just be holders. It would be riders, too, and dragons, and whers and their handlers." That was, after all, the way Pernese society worked. It was the way that the people were kept safe. Curiously, she asked, "Do you have any idea when the last time someone even tried to go north of the mountains was?"
