Lucky was all but counting down the days until she was fifteen and therefore old enough to finally become a Candidate. Less than a Turn to go now. She had everything she needed to be successful: a family history of riders, enthusiasm, Alexander the not-so-domestic feline... she was only really missing one thing that other people seemed to have. A family. Oh, her mother was alive, she had living half-siblings that she hadn't seen or heard from in Turns, but that wasn't a family.

It was way too late to do anything to change that. Her mother had made her choices. Maze and Kanon had both gone off to other Weyrs. There wasn't anything wrong with growing up in the creche, but at least some kids there got frequent visits from their parents! They weren't stuck with ridiculous names that weren't even dignified enough for a pet, either.

She wasn't sure what this visit was going to accomplish. Maybe just getting it all off her chest? Either way, she had to confront her mother before she became a Weyrling someday. Why not now?

She knocked on the door to Lexien's weyr.

Though she certainly didn't think it would be today, Lexien knew that sometime it would come up.

She knew she was not a good mother. She never was. It was remarkable that Maze and Lucky turned out as they did, and Kanon was another story. Even before she lost Quth, she was not a good mother. Her time had always been spent on the weyrlings, on Quth, on making lesson plans and teaching, being a mentor to the newest generation of dragonriders.

Deep down, she supposed that D'fid truly had the right of it, to just not have kids. It was far too late now, she supposed.

Mikazuchith lifted his head when he heard the knocking. Lexien set her lesson plans aside, turning to the door from her desk.

"Come in."

"Hello, mother," Lucky said tightly as she entered the weyr. The shared weyr. Her mother had time for some man (okay, she knew D'fid was the Candidatemaster, but he was still just some man) but none for her own children. How apparently typical. For so long, Lucky had thought her older sister was just a bitter, spiteful person who didn't see how cool their mom was even if she never had time for them. Now... Now Lucky wasn't so sure.

Ah. It was that time.

Lexien could tell from the tone that this would be another less than pleasant conversation. The same as it had been with Kanon. Lucky was different though, or so she hoped.

Hello Lucky. Mikazuchith rumbled a little, lifting his head from his ledge to look back into the weyr.

"Hello, Lucky. What is on your mind?" Lexien was going to let her speak, that was really all she could do.

[Fel]

Lucky froze for a moment. She hadn't really thought through exactly what she was going to say once she got here. She just knew she needed to get things off her chest. Somehow.

"Don't call me that. It's a ridiculous name," she said reflexively. Not that she'd though about what she'd rather be called. "Did you ever think about that? Or about me at all after I was born?"

Oh. Mikazuchith realized he should probably stay out of this. Maybe. He could crawl through Lexien's memories, learn about the man she had loved before D'fid. Lucky certainly was taking after him, it seemed.

Lexien instead motioned to a chair. This was going to be a long conversation and she didn't want Lucky to be standing the entire time, it was just going to be exhausting. "Sit, then. We are going to have a long talk today, I think."

She sat back, trying to not let out an exasperated sigh. "Before you were born, I was not riding brown. After you were born, I had lost my green - Quth. And I lost your father, Busccaron of Brown Teveth, or Bucky as everyone called him. We chose your name together, a lucky name for a lucky little girl."
