PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Mulder is best described as intensely driven toward curiosity. Once he grabs onto an idea, something he wants to know, he never lets go. He will do whatever it takes to succeed, with little thought for who else he may hurt in the efforts. He can often end up isolated, prioritizing his quest over the people around him, and while the loneliness sometimes gets to him, he refuses to let it show.
He is not particularly trusting, assuming that anyone and everyone may be involved in a plot to prevent him from learning "the truth". What that truth is, he doesn't have the slightest clue, but he knows it has to be important for so many people to be trying to stop him. Even if those around him are kindly trying to convince him not to pursue a pointless idea, he interprets it as malicious and devious scheming. The only thing he's quick to believe in are conspiracies. He's bright, but his talents are often considered to be wasted.
When he does decide he cares about someone, he's as relentlessly protective of them as he is of his work. He opens up to few people, but on those occasions he does so completely and without reservations.

HISTORY:
Mulder was a rather easy child to raise when he was young. He was friendly, outgoing and intelligent, able to strike up conversation with other children and adults alike. While he had his occasional squabbles with the other creche children, and especially his younger sister, they rarely lasted long.
It didn't come as any particular surprise when he apprenticed as a scribe at ten. He'd always been fond of books and learning, listening intently to the Harpers but more interested in the stories than the songs. In the immutability of the written word, which could be taken as truth when spoken words may have changed over time. After a few Turns, he transferred from the Weyr to Harper Hall. He missed his sister and parents dearly, but there were frequent letters exchanged.
At the Hall, he was able to slake his thirst for knowledge, to learn those things that few others did. To see the oldest books and copy them exactly, and to know that another generation would know the truth. However, he also got to see the worst sides of people. He saw Evander's rise and fall, and few willingly to openly question his assertion that the old Lord had died of natural causes. He saw jealousy when he walked the tables to become a Journeyman. He saw greed and need alike after the fires, and then he saw revolution and distrust.
His own distrust had grown over the Turns. Not every book he saw agreed in the idea that riders and the Weyr were doing the right thing. He looked for answers, and those he thought he found often both scared and excited him. Some questioned the veracity of the answers he found, stated them to be the result of bias if not an outright fiction, but he was convinced. The Weyr simply did not have Pern's best interests at heart. They did their duty, but they had their own, more sinister motives.
So when a bluerider came in Search and her dragon was interested in him, he took it as an opportunity, to get inside the Weyr and learn there. He would find the truth, and nobody would stand in his way.
