There's gotta be something better;
Something better...
There's gotta be something better for me"

FULL APPEARANCE:
Shain is relatively tall, with—as is generally expected of her biological sex—narrow hips and comparatively shoulders. She doesn’t let that stop her from wearing dresses, it just means she has to work a little harder to alter them than some women might. She has a narrow, somewhat elongated face, with smaller than usual ears and wide, bright blue eyes. Her nose is long and narrow as well, slightly hooked in the manner of a bird’s beak, and her chin is quite pointed. Her hair is a honey-colored blonde and tightly curled, usually worn no longer than the ends of her ears for any longer and it becomes nigh unmanageable. As it stands, she spends an almost inordinate amount of time caring for it, but she doesn’t mind; she likes her hair.
She tends to dress in colors that complement her complexion: soft blues, yellows, and greens. She avoids red whenever possible, and favors long skirts and frilly dresses: the more embroidery, the better.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Shain is a sweet, bubbly, outgoing young woman. She loves to chat with everyone she meets, being interested in hearing just about anyone’s life story. On a certain level, she just wants to confirm that everything she experienced wasn’t completely abnormal, that other people sometimes had the same doubts and hopes, but on the other hand she’s truly interested. However, she can also be highly empathetic, and struggles when people tell less-happy stories. She wants everyone to have made life what they want it to be, and has trouble separating her own feelings from those of others.
She uses a lot of what she feels to feed her art. It’s what she’s always loved: painting and drawing on any surface that she can get her hands on. The floor, the walls, doors, bed frames… she’s determined to make the stone underground world the Pernese live much of their lives in as colorful as the world outside.
She isn’t especially good at keeping to a schedule, or sticking to much of anything else. She’s attracted to spontaneity, and will sometimes change things up just for the sake of change. However, the one thing she refuses to change is her sunny disposition and unshakeable faith that somehow everything will work out for the best.

BIRTHPLACE: High Reaches Hold
HISTORY:
Despite being born with little hope of being more than a drudge, Shain always thought she was destined for something greater. She had to be. She didn’t want to spend her whole life as a dishboy. In fact, she didn’t want to spend her life as a boy at all!
Still, for her first eighteen Turns, Shain was nothing more than yet another wrinkly-fingered pot-washer at High Reaches Hold. She spent her days smiling and chatting, gossiping with the other drudges while dreaming of a greater destiny, a higher calling. She wasn’t satisfied with her life; she wanted to be more. But every mark she earned went not to getting her out of that place, but toward paint. Shain would paint anything she could, in whatever free moments she had. When she couldn’t afford brushes she used her fingers, and when she ran out of her own furniture to use as a canvas she turned to everything else in her family’s quarters.
She never was quite certain why nobody ever commented on her stubborn insistence on wearing dresses, even when she hit puberty and was quite clearly not like the other girls. Maybe everyone was already so used to her being a girl that they didn’t care. Maybe, and more likely, she was simply so overlooked that nobody noticed. Still, she sometimes worried that she was going to be told that she couldn’t be what she wanted. Sometimes she worried that she’d be stuck in that life forever.
However, that finally changed when out of the sky swooped a blue dragon who demanded via his rider (for he seemed unwilling to speak to anyone else) to see the young people of the right age, and he found Shain acceptable. More than acceptable; he wanted to take her back to the Weyr, and how in Faranth’s name was she supposed to turn that down. Become a rider? That was just the sort of thing she’d been hoping for!
