Kalyle stands out more than a little in a crowd. The man is absolutely huge, dwarfing most people with his height alone, but he’s also built like a tank, big and strong and more than a little intimidating. His brow is heavy, with thick, dark-blonde eyebrows. His eyes are wide, and a greenish hazel color. His head is slightly on the pointy side; unfortunately for him, he started going bald extremely young, and regularly shaves what little hair he has left due to how ridiculous he ends up looking when it starts growing out. He has a large nose and rather prominent ears. He often has a somewhat dorky-looking smile on his face.

Kalyle is a rather goofy man, enjoying jokes and simply having fun with life. He doesn’t often care what other people think of him, so long as he’s happy with himself. He can be rather loud and excitable, especially when he starts getting competitive, which is nearly every time he plays a game. He enjoys it greatly when people underestimate him, though that’s happened less frequently as he’s gotten older, at least in physical contests. He also detests cheaters, and isn’t afraid to physically threaten those who attempt to bypass the rules. In fact, he isn’t afraid to physically threaten anyone, especially since there are few people larger than he is.
He’s extremely protective of the people he loves, but is especially protective of Ja’er. His friendship, once earned, is gained for life, and he considers loyalty and a willingness to work together to be two of the greatest virtues a person can possess. He’s far happier as part of a team than he is working on his own, and he’s extremely extroverted, hating solitude. Despite the circumstances that led to him ending up at High Reaches, he’s extremely loyal to the place, which has become his home; he has nothing else to return to, after all. Whatever resentment he may once have had is gone, and he’s much happier forgiving people than holding grudges.

Born practically in the shadow of High Reaches Weyr during wartime, Kalyle was taught from a young age to be wary of dragons in the sky. One never knew if it was another Weyr raiding for supplies or High Reaches looking for people to press into service, and Kalyle was always unclear as to which one was supposed to be worse. However, he knew that the shadow of wings on the ground meant that it was time to drop whatever he was doing and hide.
When he was seven, the wings in the sky were green, and he hid as he always did. However, his mother, who had always looked young for her age, didn’t manage to hide before the green had spotted her. The greenrider wanted to take her as a Candidate, but neither she nor his father were taking it. They fought and were killed, and only afterward did the green realize that there were children present. With no adults left around, the rider did the kindest thing she could at that point: she brought them to the Weyr to be raised. If nothing else, they’d be useful workers someday, both being extremely large for their age. Neither Kalyle nor Kajje ever spoke about what had happened to the boy who decided they were now his brothers, Jander.
Jander and Kalyle quickly became close, and Kalyle quickly appointed himself the older boy’s protector. Sure, he was younger, but he was big, and strong, and never wanted to see anyone close to him hurt. Ever. He’d stood by and his parents had been killed, so now he wasn’t going to stand by.
Eventually Jander decided to stand as a Candidate, and Kajje followed soon after. Jander Impressed to a blue, becoming Ja’er, and Kajje Impressed to a brown a couple of Turns later. Kalyle was left behind, still Standing, but not being chosen. He never had to fight in the war, and he eventually aged out, however briefly, since shortly after High Reaches changed the age limit on Impression to thirty. He’s glad for the second chance at a dragon, but if one hadn’t chosen him before, why should one now?
UPDATES
- Impressed to white Cuccoth, then had to watch one of his friends die on the Sands
- Has thrown his support behind the goldriders... or at least Aldia.
- Graduated to the Wings, but was disappointed when Terminath died. Blames Ariath for what happened.
- Cuccoth and Wintrath both try to approach the same clump of Thread and end up colliding when one takes a sharp angle to get to it. Cuccoth's right wing is torn by the green's claws, and his right leg and tail are badly scored. Kalyle's right knee is badly sprained in the crash.
- Kalyle and Cuccoth transfer to Firestorm Wing when some reshuffling occurs after an especially disastrous Threadfall.
