FULL APPEARANCE:
Anyuli is a little smaller than average height and is of average build. She has a heart-faced shape and a dimpled chin; she's quite cute, really. Nothing imposing about her at all. Her eyes are wide and innocent, dark blue. Her light brown hair is long and wavy, generally kept back in a ponytail or braid, though she does like to leave it down when she can get away with it.
She can tend to wear some rather shapeless clothing, being somewhat self-conscious, though she does like bright colors. She's fond of skirts, and will wear them pretty much any time that she isn't working.
PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY:
Anyuli is a surprisingly cheerful and optimistic woman despite everything that's happened. She's friendly and sunny, and is always convinced that things will eventually work out. It might take a lot of hard work and perseverance, but it will eventually work out. She has no lack of determination or perseverance, and is in fact prone to over-working herself in an effort to achieve her goals.
She likes other people, and mostly just wants to please. She wants to be good enough, and will do anything to prove it. Even when she thinks something is wrong, if she is told to do it she'll cheerlessly obey. She's a little jaded, and doesn't have much trust in leadership. She thinks everyone has the potential to be corrupted, but still isn't especially likely to hold that against them unless they're in her chain of command.
She's a little on the soft-spoken side, and can over-enunciate at times. She stuttered rather severely as a child, but now almost never does so unless highly stressed. She can be a bit cautious and careful. She hates the sight of blood, almost to the point of feeling slightly light-headed when she does see it.
HISTORY
FAMILY:
Suranli, Mother (Not on speaking terms)
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: None
BIRTHPLACE: Fort Hold
HISTORY:
The illegitimate daughter of a drudge and a man who never came forward to claim her, Anyuli was never meant to be anything but forgotten. And, for the most part, she was. Her mother hardly paid the least bit of attention to her beyond ensuring that she had the necessities to survive, and eventually saw to it that she was assigned to work anywhere but as a drudge, to avoid having her around.
This somehow resulted in Anyuli becoming a guard. She was... not very good at it, though she tried. She was clumsy with weapons, and when told to learn to "be assertive" when challenging those who were somewhere they weren't supposed to be, her voice came out as more of a squeak. But she was still a guard. Never given an important post, often stuck doing menial chores such as armor repair and sweeping, but she was still a guard. She clung to it as her identity, because she had no family to cling to instead. And if she was mostly dead weight, well... at least things were mostly pretty quiet.
She so desperately wanted to do well, to impress someone. When Vellat was poisoned and Evander took his place, she thought she had her chance. A new Lord Holder, one who surely wouldn't have any preconceived notions about who was and who wasn't a useful guard. She redoubled her efforts at training, and was rewarded by her captain acknowledging all the hard work she put in. But never her skill. That stayed level, nonexistent. Evander chose his elite guards to be his personal bodyguards, and she wasn't among them. She was jealous; even knowing what they had to do, she wanted to bei one. To have even the Lord Holder acknowledge her skill. Or at the very least, be considered good enough for a wher.
She kept trying. Poured all of her effort into her work, neglecting any sort of social life, and still she failed. Sometimes she found relief in the fact that the Lord Holder was cruel, that she was afraid to even look him in the eye lest he hurt her; not being one of his chosen meant she was around him less. Still, that some were elevated didn't mean that other guards didn't have to do some of the same things. She found herself obligated to commit atrocities in the name of protecting Fort Hold, and she did them all, desperate to be a "good" guard. Even when it made her stomach turn and she spent her evenings unable to eat or sleep, she did it in hopes of being good enough. She never was. None of them were, to protect Evander; he was found dead, murdered by a wher.
On some level, Anyuli thought the Lord Holder's death would be another chance to start over. Try again. It wasn't. The killer was never found; even though if there were some that were obvious suspects, nobody could ever prove who had done it. She continued to be relegated to grunt work, and tried to put the past behind her despite the fact that she could never forget any of it.
Turns passed, and the nightmares faded but never went away. The new Lord Holder was reasonable, and fair, and life returned to the routine it had been before Evander's rise to power. Quiet. Dull. Kind of empty. Anyuli mostly fell to the wayside, and that was sort of okay, she figured. She'd never be good enough for anything else anyway. She had the safest patrols, with no chance of distinguishing herself. Or even, frankly, coming across another living creature along the interior of the wall. The Holdfolk generally didn't go that far, and nothing made it over the wall.
Except for Brak. The bronze had come to see if there were eggs, and wasn't about to let any wall stop him. He'd managed to scramble over the top without being detected, and hid out in its shadow where Anyuli found him. She'd meant to kick him out, honest, except she couldn't stop her voice from cracking and Brak wasn't fooled in the slightest into thinking she could do a thing about his presence. He decided he would stay. With her. Truth be told, he was lonely, and she still stung from being passed over for consideration for a wher time and again. If one from outside the walls chose her, who could stop her?
And so the bond was made, and Brak became Anbrask, and Anyuli discovered that having a wher didn't really change her daily duties at all. But at least she wasn't quite so alone any more.
