It was a cool spring morning, the kind where the air hung heavy with the humidity from the prior night's rain. The ground was soaked from the precipitation, soft and malleable. It was before sunrise, with only hints of daylight starting the glow on the horizon.
Fragile smiled to herself as she dug, her arms and knees fully encased in mud. She didn't mind the damp conditions. In fact, the rain was exactly the kind of weather she had been waiting for after another of High Reaches' long, cold winters. She dug deeper into the wet earth, revealing what she had been searching for.
Triumphantly, she plucked the grubs from the ground, transferring them to the small box laid open beside her.
Why bother dig? Plenty bugs in weyr. Fragisk commented, sniffing at the box. Lots mud and work for small amount.
"I enjoy digging for the grubs," Fragile said gently as she pulled more from the Earth. "It's meditative, a nice way to unwind after our duties. Besides, a hot bath feels nicer when you're cleaning off a solid layer of grime."
Fair. Fragisk snorted, still not entirely convinced, but not wanting to discuss further. He resigned himself to sitting and watching as Fragile continued to dig, humming to herself. Neither paid much mind to the person approaching them from across the weyrbowl.
