A letter arrives at Benden. It is not burned or crumpled this time and is written in a neat, professional hand.

Dear Father,

The drudge you sent me, Dobby, has Impressed and I have informed him he is free of all obligations to our family. Whatever you wish of me, leave him out of it and do not send another. High Reaches is no longer a weyr that permits innocents to be collateral damage into riders' private disputes. I have warned Dobby's weyrlingmaster and she will not be passing along any letters between you. Your association is over.

If you have words for me, you may say them to me directly. If you truly wish to help me...I think it is best that you don't. High Reaches isn't that sort of place anymore and thank Faranth for that.

I hope you are well. Much has happened since we last saw each other. Please meet me tomorrow evening at High Reaches, so that we can catch up.

Semaca Weyr continues to be a singularly disorganized and chaotic locale. Leadership is every bit as inexperienced as feared, though the fact is perhaps moot in light of recent news: O'tlan is stepping down. I have thus far been unable to ascertain his specific reasons, as the man has become exceedingly reclusive over the past several months, but I have heard the following theories from various sources (for the sake of thoroughness I have recorded them all, though I admit that some are dubious at best):

1. He is ill. The rumors have suggested several possible maladies, though the times he's actually been seen in public recently he hasn't appeared ill. However, I must concede that not all illnesses are necessarily visible, and this seems one of the more likely scenarios.

2. He was blackmailed into stepping down. The rumors neglect to say who might be blackmailing him, or on what basis—of course, keeping secrets is rather the point of blackmail, so that the basis is unknown is not evidence against blackmail.

3. He was pressured into it by his lovers. He seems to be involved with both Chalay—the Healer's Wing leader—and Vella—the Weyr Guard leader, or at least was at the time of the last Hatching. I have been unable to confirm if this remains true.

4. He was pressured into it because of his lovers due to the appearance of nepotism.

5. His dragon resented that he spent more time on work than with her.

6. He's being manipulated or mind controlled by an outside source. I have heard this suggested of: Benden, Tuckal, local traditionalists, a spotty, a fire lizard, and a wher.

7. He is inherently lazy and did not wish to put in any more effort.

8. His half-brother, who I have previously written to you regarding, used the weight of their family to force him out.

9. It's a ploy by Fartoo to gain power for the whers.

10. It's a ploy by Molly to take power away from those with bonds.

11. He's pregnant.

12. "187098470295000" I have no idea what this number refers to. I will continue to try to decode its meaning.

Outside of its leadership woes, the Weyr seems to be doing fairly well. Supplies have been less of a sore spot than they were at the time of the Weyr's inception, and the recent spotty attack on the Candidates' camping trip seems to have deterred at least some people from venturing into the jungle, so that danger has been reduced. However, the kitchens continue to insist on sampling new foods brought back by Mazurka Squad, the safety of some of which is in doubt.

Wild whers appear to be venturing closer to the Weyr than they once did. I am uncertain whether they have decided that the Weyr isn't a threat or have been driven closer by other factors. There is a formerly wild blue who recently bonded to a farmer, I shall attempt to ask him when the opportunity arises.

Construction on the wall continues apace. Most of the Weyr is still opposed, but the Guard captain seems to care little for that fact.

My next letter will follow at its usual interval unless something of particular importance occurs.

It's hard to believe that it has been nearly eighteen months since my Rivoth hatched. At once it feels too fast, and yet not enough time. Wasn't he only a hatchling yesterday, and now we are asked to choose a wing? I'm sure you can sympathize.

High Reaches has nothing for us, so we are transferring to Fort. All of the official channels have been satisfied, and we will be members of Twilight Wing, under Wingleader S'bor. Graduation will be next month, but as we are being asked to choose our adult weyrs, Rivoth and I will visit Fort several times to get our bearings. I hope you will be available to show your sibling around, properly.

You dont have friends. You pretend to have friends. Just admit you got Jasp and Cite to track me. I wont let you stomp on my dreams any longer. When I wanted to be a Healer you told me I was too clumsy to be that way. This is a formal goodbye. The next time you see me might be on dragon or wherback. I will not say hello.

Ps. Dont tell Jasp to go after me. She has too much important work to do to run your pointless errands. Please choke and die for me.

Things have been going well. Joheith and I have... come to an understanding. We don't particularly love one another. But I... suppose I don't HATE him. He's helped me to understand my own issues. In exchange, I've helped him to... reevaluate some things. He's very dedicated but I've helped him to really decide what to be dedicated to. We both are agreeing to go to High Reaches once we graduate, in order to try and find our way into some leadership role. Please write back when you can. i'd like to hear more about Semeca, if you can spare the time.

Also.I'd really like some of the soap you make. If you could send some, that's great.

A note on parchment that appears to be about ten turns old is found in the Healer storerooms, not far from where the note accusing Stephen of experimentation had been found. It is written in a different hand than the last note, the letters crisp and masculine. Most of the words have been smudged but you can make out a little bit. There is no sign of how it got there.

Gerrell is crazy...spreading rumors about an apprentice, Stephen, performing unethical experiments...obsession...I've looked into the reports and confirmed they are false...need to talk to him...some sort of grudge because Stephen healed a patient he couldn't...can't let this get out of hand.
