Weyrling An'sa of Green Heliocireath - Heiro, Impression
The cracking of the egg finally drew Aneesa's attention away from her attempts to flirt with Heiro, her gaze darting over to the vibrant shell. It had neatly cracked in two, and a stunning green who radiated poise and warmth shook some of the goop off her.
"She's a green alright!" Aneesa said with a grin and a quick glance at Heiro. "Maybe I should have made a bet with you," she added with a lighthearted chuckle.
Her eyes quickly went back to the dragon, who was addressing the candidates and audience as a whole. Oh you poor dears, in those flimsy robes, with no furs or dragonhide to keep you warm and dry! Don't worry- keep your minds nice and open and I'll be quick and we can get you inside before this rain starts. Doesn't that sound wonderful?
Aneesa beamed at the green. She wasn't as large as the brown or bronze Aneesa wanted, but she could like a green like this, so considerate and concerned for others. The candidate straightened herself a bit, watching carefully as the new hatchling made her way through the crowd of hopefuls, carefully inspecting them with a soft gaze. She was so nice and gentle! Aneesa found herself truly and deeply hoping that this was her future partner, but was steeling herself for disappointment in case she wasn't chosen.
Then the green approached Aneesa and Heiro. Aneesa smiled warmly at the dragon, trying to project her own love for others to try and resonate with it. The dragonet looked at her, then at Heiro, like it was thinking the choice over. Aneesa couldn't blame the green, if she couldn't be its partner, Heiro would be a fantastic choice too. She also cared deeply for others, Aneesa could tell.
Like a flash, the dragon's teeth flashed, and she was biting Heiro's arm, in a vision that was painfully familiar to Aneesa. The dragon was trying to push Heiro away from Aneesa. Aneesa yelped, reaching for the dragon to pull it off her friend.
Don't be afraid, Aneesa, the dragon's mindvoice echoed in Aneesa's head. I won't let them hurt you, like they hurt me. Listen- and I will tell you all of I have learned of your so-called peers. The last word hung heavy with obvious disgust.
Aneesa wrapped her arms around the dragon, trying to pry her jaws off of Heiro's arm. What was happening? How was this dragon, who was so sweet and docile just a moment before, already acting as if she had been scorned by the world?
"What do you mean they hurt you? You've just hatched! No one has done anything to you!" Aneesa cried as she unlatched the dragonet's mouth from her friend. "Heiro! I'm so sorry, are you alright? Do you need a healer?" Aneesa reached an arm out to comfort the other woman, but the green blocked Aneesa's hand from touching Heiro.
Do not fall for her tricks! The green said, pushing Aneesa back and placing herself between Aneesa and the rest of the candidates. She and the rest of this lot are nothing more than liars and scum who will hurt you as soon as you let your guard down. You can only trust me to protect you!
"What--" The dragon cut off Aneesa's question before it could be spoken.
Use your mind, mine! The green said, her eyes swirling rainbows. They cannot hear our thoughts, it is the only safe way to communicate.
What do you mean? Aneesa asked in her mind, following the dragon's instructions. She felt the pit of her stomach drop as the swirling rainbows and the feelings of the dragon rushed her psyche. A deep, powerful love, buried underneath a massive heap of distrust and scrutiny. Too much for a dragon so new to the world.
I, Heliocireath will be your sole protector. It is us against this cruel world. Look now, at your former classmates. Already they betray your goodwill with jealousy and hatred. They loathe that you have impressed before them. Their emotions are fickle, and will drive them to hurt you. But worry not, mine. I will keep you safe. As the dragon spoke, her tail curled around Aneesa's legs, pulling the two close.
"No, they're not like that!" Aneesa blurted out. Heliocireath glared at her, and Aneesa went back to mentally communicating. I don't know why you are so convinced they are terrible. These are my friends. Heiro is nothing but a sweet woman who wants to protect others, just like me. Like us.
Not at all like us. The dragon scoffed, even as she nuzzled Aneesa.
Aneesa, no, An'sa. She had decided she would elide when she impressed. An'sa placed a hand on Heliocireath's head, stroking the smooth hide that was still damp with egg goop. They still want to protect others. Protect Pern. We're just going to have to show you that. Do you want to go eat? She asked, hoping the delusion and negativity was hunger induced.
No, you'll see that people are not as good as they want you to think they are. The dragon looked up at the growing clouds. I do want to eat.
I have chosen my rider. She announced to the sands, shifting back to her sweet, soothing voice she had used for everyone. Please everyone, get inside before this rain starts coming down and soaks you all through. I apologize for my outburst, a hunger pang startled me and I lashed out inappropriately. I do hope you'll forgive me, I regret the harm I caused deeply.
As Heliocireath pulled An'sa towards the meat that had been prepared for the hatching, the newly minted rider's heart sunk. She could feel Heliocireath's apology. It was hollow, and she didn't mean a single word she had said.
